Obituary of Mary E. Sponauer

Mary E. Sponauer (nee Hoban), 83, passed away on Friday, December 30, 2016 at Arden Courts, a memory care center in Whippany, NJ. Mary was born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, PA and graduated from Hanover Township High School and Wyoming Seminary Dean School of Business. She was a secretary at Planters Nut & Chocolate Company in Wilkes-Barre, where she met her husband, the late John C. Sponauer. Mary and John wed on June 22, 1957 and were married for 48 years until his death in 2005. In 1963, due to a job transfer, Mary and John moved their family to Edison, NJ where they raised their two children. In the early 1980s they moved to Morris Plains, NJ due to another job transfer for her husband John, who then worked for Nabisco. Mary is survived by her daughter Sheila and son-in-law Kevin Higgins of Chatham, son John T. Sponauer and daughter-in law Lynn Conley of New Providence, her four grandchildren: Claire and Jean Marie Higgins, and Thomas and Paige Sponauer, her brother Thomas Hoban of Oakland, NJ, and nephews David Hoban of Hoboken, NJ and Thomas Hoban of Ridgefield, CT. She was predeceased by her sister, Kathleen Hoban, in 2009. Mary was a beloved friend, mother and grandmother, and will be dearly missed. She was active in the Morris Plains and St. Virgil’s senior groups. For two years, she lived at Sunrise of Morris Plains, and then moved to Arden Courts in 2015. Relatives and friends may call on Tuesday, January 3, 2017 from 4:00-7:00 PM at Dangler Funeral Home, 600 Speedwell Ave, Morris Plains, NJ. A funeral Mass of Christian burial will be held at St. Virgil’s Church, 250 Speedwell Ave, Morris Plains, NJ on Wednesday, January 4, 2017 at 10:00 AM. In lieu of flowers, donations in Mary’s name may be made to: St. Virgil’s Church, 250 Speedwell Ave, Morris Plains, NJ 07950, or to Villa Walsh Academy, 60 Western Ave, Morristown, NJ 07960, from which two of Mary’s granddaughters graduated.
