Obituary of C. George Alvey

C. George Alvey, 90, passed away peacefully at home on March 28, 2017. He was born in Champagne, IL and grew up in Cincinnati, OH. For the past 66 years, he resided in Madison, NJ. He graduated from Walnut Hills High School in 1944 where he was a member of the Stage Crew as the chief electrician. He also belonged to the Visual Aids Club and German Club. He entered the US Merchant Marine Academy at King’s Point in the Fall of 1944 and graduated in 1947 with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Engineering. When the war ended, he was a Midshipman on his way to Japan. He ended his sea career as a Lieutenant. George received his MBA from the NYU Stern School of Business. He was a Professor at the County College of Morris from 1968 to 1991 and retired as a Professor Emeritus. George was a member of the founding faculty at CCM and was instrumental in developing the curriculum for the Business Department. He loved Business Math and wrote a textbook on the subject. The book went through many editions, and even in retirement, he continued to be an author. George’s enthusiasm for his subject did not end with his work at CCM. He helped to found the CCM chapter of Alpha Beta Gamma Honors Society. He was honored upon his retirement from CCM by the national Alpha Beta Gamma organization with a scholarship offered in his name. George was a member of the United Methodist Church, Madison, and of the church Couples Club. He and his late wife, Mary R. Alvey, enjoyed attending theater, symphony, opera and dance performances both locally and in New York City. He is survived by his children, Sheryl Alvey Peters and her husband, Edgar E. Peters of Pasadena, CA, David G. Alvey and his wife, Kris Koshak Alvey of Harding Township, NJ. He is also survived by his beloved grandchildren, Ian Peters and Kelly Bixby Peters of Jefferson, GA, Lucia Peters and her husband, Anthony Hutain of Arlington, VA, Alexa Alvey Flowers and Jonathan Flowers of Alexandria, VA, and Rachel Alvey of Harding Township, NJ as well as a great-granddaughter, Sarah Peters of Jefferson, GA and numerous loving nieces and nephews. George was predeceased by his beloved wife, Mary R. Alvey in 2015. Family and friends are welcome to gather on Sunday, April 2, 2017 from 2-5 pm at Burroughs, Kohr & Dangler Funeral Home, 106 Main St., Madison, NJ 07940. A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, April 3, 2017, at 10:00 am at the United Methodist Church, Madison, NJ. Interment will follow at St. Vincent Cemetery, Madison, NJ. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in memory of George to the County College of Morris Foundation, 214 Center Grove Road, Randolph, NJ 07869.
