Obituary of Griffith Humphrey

~~Griffith Humphrey, 83 of Morris Plains passed away on Saturday May 27th after a period of declining health spent in the New Jersey Fireman’s Home in Boonton, NJ.  Born in Morristown on June 26, 1933, he was the son of Griffith C. and Alicia E. (Sutcliffe) Humphrey.  He was predeceased by his wife Marilyn A. (Havens) Humphrey, and his brothers George H. and Peter Humphrey, and his son Griffith Douglas Humphrey.

Griff was a lifelong resident of Morris Plains, and was a 1952 Graduate of Morristown High School.  He enlisted in the United States Navy, and served as an Electrician’s mate on a wooden minesweeper, and the aircraft carrier the USS Coral Sea during the end of the Korean War.  After his honorable discharge, he returned to Morris Plains.  In 1957 he married his wife Marilyn (Lynn) of 51 years, and joined the Morris Plains Fire Department.  He went to work for New Jersey Bell Telephone which became Verizon, where he spent his entire career, retiring in 1994.  He served as Chief of the Morris Plains Fire Department in 1967, and in 2007 was recognized for 50 years of service to Morris Plains.

Griff is survived by his daughter Elizabeth Trovato and her husband Stephen of Warren, NJ, his daughter Linda Trew and her husband Paul of Monroe GA, his son Thomas Humphrey of Columbia, MD, and his daughter-in-law Kathleen Humphrey of Warren, NJ.  Seven grandchildren, Paul Humphrey, Griffith and Patrick Humphrey, Katie, John and Christopher Trovato, and Emily Trew.

A memorial visitation will be held at the Dangler Funeral Home, 600 Speedwell Avenue, Morris Plains, on Friday June 2nd from 4-7pm with a Memorial Service at 7pm.  Donations may be made in lieu of flowers to St. Paul’s Episcopal Church, Morris Plains, NJ or the Morris Plains Fire Department.
