Obituary of Robert E. de Poortere

Robert “Bob” de Poortere died Sunday, February 18, 2018 after a brief illness at Morristown Medical Center. He was 83.

Bob was born on February 21st, 1934 in Newark, NJ to the late Cathleen Dunleavy and Alfred de Poortere. He was raised in Newark, and Green Village, and settled in Green Village after he married his wife of 59 years, Maureen Merrigan, of Manhattan.

Bob served our country during the Korean War with the U.S. Air Force, and worked in the Bell System for over 30 years until he retired in 1991 as consultant for Bell Laboratories.  He was a founding member of Christ the King Church in New Vernon and also served as a police officer for Harding Township. Bob spent much of his free time coaching baseball & softball; he was a former president of the AOH; and a member of the Knights of Columbus in Morristown.

Bob was pre deceased by his brother, Alfred, and sisters, Mildred and Mary.

Bob is survived by his wife, his brother, Richard, his 6 sons, their wives, and 12 grandchildren.

Visitation will be Friday February 23, 2018 from 3-5 PM and 7-9PM at Burroughs, Kohr & Dangler Funeral Home 106 Main St, Madison, NJ. His funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10:30AM on Saturday, February 24, 2018 at Christ the King, 16 Blue Mill Rd., New Vernon, NJ. Interment will follow at St Vincent’s Cemetery in Madison.
