I first met Babushka Zoya when I was in college with her granddaughters, Marina and Olga. Our families have bonded ever since our Rutgers days. Marina and Olga are my sisters and we walk this life together, united. Both our families formed a love and kinship over beautiful meals Babushka Zoya would make for us throughout the years. We shared so many heartwarming conversations about her life back in the old country. She was always so elegant, sweet, and caring to my family and me. My mother, Maria, adored seeing her every chance she could. Our love for Babushka Zoya and the Kravchuk-Klimovitch family was forged over lived experiences as immigrants to this country, cultural and intellectual exchanges over cheers with vodka, and delicious recipes she would prepare with some much love. She would always make sure I was well-fed. She always worried about my weight (too skinny!). I never had a chance to grow up with my own grandmothers. I thank life for letting me experience Zoya’s love. I always carry with me the image of her opening the door and greeting us in the foyer of the house with a warm smile and the words, I love you. We love you, too, Babushka Zoya. You will always remain in my heart as the grandma I got to have and enjoy. I am eternally grateful and humbled that I got to be your family and friend here in America. Rest in peace, Babushka.
