Obituary of Robert Frederick Weigand
Devoted Husband. Loving Father, Grandfather, and Great-Grandfather. Proud WWII Veteran.
Robert Frederick Weigand, aged 100, passed away peacefully on July 1, 2025, closing a century marked by service, resilience, and a lifelong dedication to family.
Born in 1925 in Newark, New Jersey, Robert graduated early from St. Benedict’s High School and began his studies at Seton Hall University. At 18 years old, he set aside his college dreams to serve his country in World War II. As a Technician Fifth Grade in the U.S. Army’s 544th Field Artillery Battalion, he operated one of the largest artillery guns of the war, serving across the Pacific—from New Guinea to Luzon and Manila. Returning home in 1946, Robert carried with him both pride and the profound impact of those years. He worked in the leather industry at his family’s company, Weigand and Doerzbacher, and later served as an auditor for many years at Foster Wheeler Corporation.
In the years that followed, Robert married Marie. Together, they built a loving home, raised six children—Robert (Bob), Marylou, Richard (Rich), Elizabeth (Betsy), Joan, and Katherine (Kathy)—with love, faith, and purpose.
Robert was also a quietly impressive athlete. He played baseball, golf, and swam with ease, but tennis was where he really shined. One year, he won Florham Park, New Jersey’s mixed doubles championship and helped build the town’s first tennis court. He even organized free tennis lessons for local kids—just the kind of thoughtful, community-minded thing he did without fanfare.
He was a strong open water swimmer, too. At the Jersey Shore—Point Pleasant, Long Beach Island, or Stone Harbor—you could count on seeing him in the ocean. After teaching his kids how to bob with the waves and keep their footing, he’d settle them safely on their towels by their mother, then head back into the water. He’d swim far beyond the breakers, moving back and forth with calm, steady strokes. Eventually, he’d emerge from the surf—tired but never too tired to toss a ball, dig for sand crabs, help collect shells, or explain whatever sea creature was found.
The family was forever changed by Marie’s sudden passing, a loss deeply felt by all. In the years later, the heartbreaking death of their youngest daughter, Kathy, at just 20 years old, left an indelible mark on Robert’s heart—one he bore with strength and grace.
In time, Robert found love again with Maryelyn, his partner for 47 cherished years. Maryelyn passed away just four months ago, a loss the family is still quietly mourning. Not only was she a loving and devoted wife, but she also cared wholeheartedly for the entire family. Their yearly fishing trip to Kawassa Lake each fall reflected not just their love for each other, but also how much they valued tradition and creating meaningful time together and with family. Robert felt her absence deeply, and her memory remained a source of comfort and strength.
Robert’s love extended fully to his grandchildren. He was present in their lives in every way—attending games, recitals, graduations, and all the milestones, big and small. Whether cheering from the sidelines or simply showing encouragement, he took genuine joy in their lives and accomplishments. His devotion to his family never wavered, and his steady presence left a lasting mark on generations to come.
Robert will be remembered for his humility, gentle spirit, and keen wit. A thoughtful listener and gifted storyteller, he shared his memories with clarity and warmth. Whether recounting tales of wartime, enjoying a cold Guinness, or simply sitting around the table with family, his steady presence brought comfort and perspective to all who knew him.
He is survived by his children Bob (spouse Barb), Rich, Marylou (spouse Pete), Betsy (fiance Dave), and Joan (spouse Lucio); grandchildren Stephanie (spouse Kyle), Robert, Corinne (fiance Hilal), Domenick (spouse Vicki), Michael, Patrick, Brenda (spouse Tony), Carrie, Michael (spouse Cara), Ethan, Matthew (spouse Patricia), step-grandson Jason, seven great-grandchildren (Owen, Norah, Clementine, Anna Lucia, Riley, Camille, Mariana, with another on the way), nephew Brian Sheridan and nieces Peggy Sheridan, Bridget Sheridan Johnson, and Suzie DeBrun. He is lovingly reunited with his grandson Lucas, sister Grace, nephew Robert, and son-in-law Charlie, who also passed before him. He is remembered by a wide circle of family and friends who treasured his character.
A funeral service will be held at Burroughs, Kohr & Dangler in Madison (Please See Service Information), followed by a celebration of life at the Livia Health and Living facility, where the staff fondly referred to him as their “Golden Boy”.
As we bid farewell, we honor a remarkable life lived with honor, compassion, and enduring love. Robert’s legacy shines on in the family he cherished. His strength, humility, and loyalty will continue to inspire all who had the pleasure of knowing him.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Robert’s memory to the Chatham Emergency Squad (www.chathamemergencysquad.org).
