Obituary of Alfred John Aloia

Please share a memory of Alfred to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Beloved husband, brother, devoted dad of seven and grandfather of 12

Alfred John Aloia, 95, died peacefully at home, surrounded by loved ones on Thursday, August 14, 2025.

Born June 24, 1930, in Orange, NJ, Al briefly lived there before his family settled in Livingston. He graduated from Grover Cleveland High School in Caldwell in 1948, and completed two years at Rutgers University.  He proudly served in the U.S. Marine Corps from 1948 to 1952, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant during the Korean War. While in the service, he boxed as a welterweight on the Parris Island team, earning a Golden Gloves title.

After his military service, Al began a nearly 40-year career with NJ Bell as a power plant manager. In 1953, he married the love of his life, Marie White, and together they raised seven children. In 1957, they moved to Randolph, where Al lived for the rest of his life.

Deeply committed to family, community, and faith, Al coached his sons’ sports teams, and was a founding member of the Cherry Lane “Bocce Club”. He was an avid crossword puzzle solver, a formidable cribbage opponent, and a passionate fly fisherman, who shared his love for the sport through avid volunteerism in NJ Trout Unlimited. Through his work with NJ Trout Unlimited, he helped bring the “Trout in the Classroom” program to Randolph elementary schools.

A member of St. Margaret of Scotland Church in Morristown for 68 years, Al served as school treasurer, parish council member, and planning committee member, helping to fund buses, a new learning center, rectory repairs, and ultimately a new church building. With Marie, he ran the parish bingo program for many years—Al calling numbers, Marie running the kitchen, and their children serving food. He was also one of the parish’s first lay lectors. If you went to 7:30 AM mass at any time from the mid-1960s to 2022, it’s likely you heard him read.

His legacy of volunteerism, leadership and love stands as a testament to the power of one life lived in service to others.

Al is survived by his seven children Marie, Dan (Donna), Debbie Repak (Mike), Tim (Nancy), Louisa, Anne Meigh (Rich), and Maggie; twelve grandchildren; his brother Frank; and many nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be Tuesday, August 19, from 4–7 PM at Dangler Funeral Home, 600 Speedwell Avenue, Morris Plains, NJ. The Funeral Mass will be Wednesday, August 20, at 10 AM at St. Margaret of Scotland Church, 6 Sussex Avenue, Morristown, NJ, with interment at Holy Rood Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital (www.stjude.org).
