I first met John while watching our sons play travel soccer in the early to mid-2000s. I would often find myself sitting near him, with Ginger always by his side, as we watched our kids pursue glory on the field. As Ginger and my wife, Ana, grew closer, and we later spent a few weeks with them in Brazil after our boys graduated from M.H.S., my appreciation for John deepened.
He had a keen intellect, read avidly, and always had interesting opinions on everything. I enjoyed our long discussions on economics and politics, and I valued his conservative perspective on some issues and his firm liberal stance on others. He was a product of his conservative upbringing in small-town North Carolina, his liberal arts education at Drew University, and his long residence in Madison.
He had an admirable sense of civic duty and served Madison with gusto. John also had a big influence on my son Gabriel—bringing him into the Madison Ambulance Corps EMS service, mentoring him, and helping pave his way into the medical profession.
We will miss him deeply.
