Obituary of Jane W. Rae
Jane W. Rae, 95, of Morristown, NJ, and East Hampton, NY, passed away peacefully at Cedar Crest, a retirement community in Pompton Plains, NJ, on October 26, 2025.
Born February 21, 1930 to John and Rita Vliet Weber, she was raised on her family’s farm, Three Fields, in Green Village, NJ. Her father was a well-known cattle dealer, her mother a homemaker. Their farm was one of the last in the New Vernon area, remaining in the family for most of the 20th century.
She graduated from Morristown High School Class of 1948, and over her career worked for several Morristown businesses as a bookkeeper and administrator between raising her three children.
Married in 1951 to John W. Rae of Madison, NJ, they built their home in the Washington Valley section of Morris Township three years later.
Her husband, who passed away in 2003, was an editor of the Newark Evening News and a prolific local author of seven books on Morristown area history.
In 2004 Jane moved to East Hampton, NY, to be closer to her son, Chip. Joining the Ladies Village Improvement Society of East Hampton, she presided over their book sales desk for nearly a decade. In 2014 she returned to NJ, moving to Cedar Crest.
She is survived by her daughter, Sharon, of Kinderhook, NY, and her son Chip of East Hampton, NY, and Old Chatham, NY. A graveside family service was held on October 29th at the family plot at the New Vernon Cemetery.
