Obituary of Eva Vidor
Éva Vidor, on the evening of November 2, left behind the company of those she loved in this world to rejoin the company of those in the next. A radiant spirit who lit up every room she entered, she will be remembered by everyone she met, whether in Budapest where she was born or in New York City or Morris Plains where she has lived since 1964, or anywhere she journeyed as a travel agent for 40 years.
Born Éva Pollák in 1932, she lost her beloved father to the Nazis but survived the holocaust through the iron determination of her mother, Gréte Pollák. At 16, she met Robert Vidor, who stole her heart and married her a few years later. Their son Peter came shortly thereafter, followed by the Hungarian Revolution in 1956 and subsequent escape to the
For over fifty years she was the receptionist/office manager in her husband’s psychiatric practice, in addition to which she worked as a travel agent specializing in bespoke tours everywhere on the planet. Four years ago she lost her dear Robert a week after enthusiastically celebrating their 70 years of marriage.
For her, life’s pleasures - the earthly and sublime alike - became whole in the conviviality with which they were shared. From the most intimate and enduring bonds of family and friendship, to serendipitous encounters along her far-reaching travels, with stories, music, wine, butter, and laughter, she wove a warming tapestry of fondness and fellowship in which each strand was enchanted and enlivened by her touch.
Those fortunate enough to have shared her table may remember her in the radiance of her affection, the bite of her wit, the earnestness of her feeling, or her clear-eyed wonder - but perhaps best of all in the immensity of her love.
She is survived by her devoted son, Peter, daughter-in-law, April, and grandsons Alex and Jordan. A gathering to share her memory will be held in January.
