Obituary of Theresa A. Hinton

Please share a memory of Theresa to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Theresa A. Hinton (McElgunn), 62, of Florham Park passed away peacefully at her home surrounded by family on November 12, 2025. Born on November 6th, 1963 to Marie and Paul McElgunn, Theresa was the third of five children. Her childhood in Florham Park was filled with love, laughter, and happy memories with her family and childhood friends.

She attended Bayley Ellard High School in Madison, NJ where she was an integral member of the color guard team. From there, she matriculated to Trenton State College (TCNJ) where she studied accounting and prepared to begin a career in the public sector. After several years in public accounting, she transitioned to the New Jersey Society of Certified Public Accountants (NJCPA), where she worked on and off for the next 30+ years.

After taking a few years off to raise her children, she returned to work at the NJCPA where she finished her career as the Chief Operating Officer (COO). She cherished the lifelong friendships she made during her time at the Society and worked tirelessly to ensure the success of the organization.

Theresa began a new chapter when she married the love of her life, Todd Hinton. She treasured her childhood in Florham Park so deeply that they bought their first home on Circle Road, but as their family grew, they knew they needed more space. Not long after, they found their dream home just around the corner from where she grew up—where they would spend more than 30 years building a life filled with countless memorable moments, laughter, and lasting memories.

Theresa is survived by her caring husband of 34 years, Todd, and her three children, Connor, Kaleigh, and Amanda. She was the beloved daughter of Marie and Paul McElgunn, and dear sister to John McElgunn (Pam), Michael McElgunn (Karen), Nora Leydon (Dan), and Jim McElgunn (Amy).

She was aunt to Kevin, Katie, Paul, Tommy, Matt, Mark, Brian, Courtney, Shawn, Shannon, Jack, Ryan, Caitlin, Ryan, Tyler, Kelly, Tommy, and Jeremy.

Theresa greeted everyone with warmth. She enjoyed time with family—reading, games, and especially trivia—and vacations with loved ones. Throughout her health battles Theresa’s focus always remained on taking care of others. She was truly one of a kind. Theresa's kindness, affection, and joyful spirit live on through her family, and she will be fondly remembered and incredibly missed by everyone whose life she touched.

In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests scholarship donations to the NJCPA in Theresa’s memory at: https://njcpa.org/join-connect/engage/scholarship/contribute. (Select “In Memory of” in the “Type” field and then enter Theresa’s name.)

Family and friends are welcome to gather at Burroughs, Kohr & Dangler Funeral Home, located at 106 Main Street, Madison, NJ on Friday, November 21, 2025 from 4-8 p.m.

The Funeral Mass will be celebrated at 10 am, Saturday, November 22, 2025, at Holy Family Church, 35 Orchard Rd., Florham Park, NJ.
