Obituary of Richard G. Markey

Richard G. “Rit” Markey, 89, of Morris Plains, NJ, passed away on Monday, November 17, 2025.

Born and raised in Morristown, Rit graduated from Morristown High School in 1955, where he was a talented baseball player. After graduation, he married his high school sweetheart, Jackie Gorry, and together they built their home in Morris Plains and raised their family.

Rit spent his career with Jersey Central Power and Light, working as a lineman and later as Chief Lineman, before retiring in 1996. He enjoyed bowling, golf, and photography, and most of all, gardening. He had a lifelong love of dogs and was an avid New York Yankees fan. Above all, Rit found his greatest joy in supporting his children and granddaughters, rarely missing any of their games or activities..

He was predeceased by his beloved wife, Jacqueline Markey (2010), and his daughter, Pamela Markey (1996).

Rit is survived by his children Glenn and his wife, Cathi Markey; Jill Markey and her husband, Bob Godon; and Michelle and her husband, Richard Rhoades. He is lovingly remembered by his granddaughters Nicole and Jacqueline Rhoades and Robin Markey, and by his great-grandson, Alessio Sheriff.

His steady presence and quiet strength will be deeply missed. As he shared with loved ones, “Don’t be sad, it’s been a good run.”

Family and friends are welcome to gather for a visitation for Richard on Thursday, November 20th from 4 pm to 7 pm at Dangler Funeral Home at 600 Speedwell Ave., Morris Plains, NJ 07950.
