Ian W. Doherty of New York, NY passed away Saturday November 15, 2025. Ian was born March 9,1973 to the late John and Ann Doherty of Long Valley, NJ. He was a kind soul loved by all who encountered him.
Ian spent his formative years in Long Valley attending Long Valley Presbyterian Church and West Morris Central High School where he excelled in art. He attended the University of Massachusetts in Amherst earning a BFA. One of his favorite highlights in college was the semester abroad he spent at La Napoule in the South of France. Upon graduation, he fulfilled his dream of moving to New York City to begin his professional life. Ian was an extremely talented artist and designer. He began a career in magazine publishing ultimately serving as Art Director. His knowledge of design and production matched no other, all learned at the feet of his father, John. Ian enjoyed participating in the Society of Publication Designers mentoring future designers.
Ian was a gregarious, kind, and amazing friend to all who had the pleasure of knowing him. His lifelong friendships from grade school to college to professional associations were based in his gracious heart. He was always there to lend a helping hand, a listening ear, and a gentle word. Ian was an artist through and through. Even decorating for a holiday brought out his unique talent.
He loved to travel, visiting friends and family. Ian felt most at home in his beloved New York City taking in museums, theater shows, restaurants, and exploring all the city has to offer. Ian walked a million miles in the city he loved.
He is survived by his beloved sister, Allyson of Boonton, NJ; his dear friend Rick Diaz of New York, NY, and his friends and family from New York, Brooklyn, Missouri, New Jersey, California, Idaho, Illinois, Nevada, Massachusetts, Texas, Connecticut, Las Vegas, North Carolina, and Northern Ireland.
