Dave wasn’t just someone who visited: he was woven into our family’s story. He was my dad’s friend from the Madison Police Department, and I loved listening to them swap police stories. The serious ones, the hilarious ones, the ones that ended in uncontrollable laughter. You could feel the years of friendship between them.
When he came to see us in Alaska, it meant so much. He was always genuinely interested in what we were doing, asking questions and really listening. And he never hesitated to sit down and play games with us, fully present, no rushing off, just enjoying the moment.
And then there were the postcards. No matter where he traveled, one would show up in the mail with his thoughtful handwriting on the back. I still have so many of them: little treasures that remind me how intentional and kind he was.
I will miss him and his postcards more than I can say. Praying for his family and everyone who loved him.

My cousin Dave was a gentleman in the true sense of the word. Always caring and thoughtful in sharing his vast knowledge of our family geneology with us. We looked forward to his yearly Thanksgiving visits and his Christmas letters telling of his travels all over the world. We will miss his unique voice and even his beautiful handwriting which left me in awe. And he was so very proud of Brian and his family. Rest in Peace, Dave.

I worked with Dave at JCPL. As the Corporate Security Officer, I first saw him at someone’s desk, standing there with his “game face” on and escorting them off the property after being fired. He cut quite an intimidating figure, his authority was very clear! It wasn’t until many years later that I had the opportunity to speak to Dave as a coworker. It was then that I found the real Dave and what a pleasure! He was so sweet and easy to talk to- we discussed our mutual fondness for martinis and he brought me a jar of olives with blue cheese! His smile was warm and genuine and lit up his whole face when he smiled. He spoke proudly and lovingly about his son and I felt a fierce pride.
The experience reminded me that you don’t truly know a person until you spend time with them, and the “outer” person can be quite different from what is really there. It was a treat to find the real Dave and spend time with him
