Obituary of Allen L. Himmelsteib

Please share a memory of Allen to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Allen Himmelsteib  of Madison, New Jersey passed away Sunday March 15, 2026 after a brief battle with cancer.  Born in Cleveland, Ohio, he graduated from Cleveland Heights High School and attended Miami University, graduating in 1971 with a degree in Philosophy.  He went on to graduate school at Kent State University in Kent, Ohio, where he lived for several years.  Work took him and his family to Chatham, New Jersey in 1982.  He spent most of his professional career in Northern New Jersey and New York City, first with Crum and Forster, and then with AIG.

Al is survived by his wife Ann Marie, and children Brian, Annie, Meg, Alex, and Kelly, as well as grandchildren Jason, Melissa, Luke, Owen, Caitlin, Megan, Molly, and Ryan.  Al loved to bike, hike, and read.  He finished his last book the day before he passed.  He never missed a workout and his travels took him to five continents, from Monrovia to Majuro to Madrid and many places in between.

Al could fix or build just about anything, and he did. Buildings from Minnesota to Liberia bear his mark and are better for his attention.  Al was very involved in the community - for years he helped deliver furniture to folks in need throughout Morris County. One of his greatest pleasures in life was getting a large, heavy, unwieldy piece of furniture up a narrow staircase, and then rewarding himself and his colleagues with a trip to a diner afterwards.  He also taught English as a second language classes and made sure his students knew that they did not go to the beach in New Jersey, rather they went down the shore.

Al will be interred in the columbarium of Grace Church in Madison, New Jersey.  A private gathering will be held for friends and family to reminisce about, regale, and celebrate his life.  He lived a full and interesting life and is loved, and will be missed.

To celebrate Al’s life, the family suggests donating to Homeless Solutions or Nourish NJ in his name, or to a cause that is close to their hearts.

Arrangements are under the care of Burroughs, Kohr & Dangler Funeral Home, Madison, NJ.
