Obituary of William M. Odell, Jr.

Please share a memory of William to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

William McKinley Odell, Jr. passed away peacefully at his home in Spring Lake, New Jersey, on Sunday, April 26, 2026. Born in Newark, New Jersey, on July 3, 1940, he lived life to the fullest with a warm sense of humor, a generous spirit, and a deep love for family and friends. Sixty-two years ago, he married the love of his life, Arlene, and together they built a wonderful life.

Bill graduated from Seton Hall Prep in 1958 and from Seton Hall University in 1962 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Accounting. He formed lifelong friendships and was a founding member of the Delta Sigma Delta fraternity. He remained a proud supporter of Seton Hall throughout his life. After college, he proudly served in the National Guard for five years during the Vietnam era.

Bill built a distinguished career in accounting and CPA education. He launched the first CPA Review course in New Jersey for Newton Becker and went on to manage the New Jersey operation, serving as a primary instructor for many years while contributing significantly to the company’s national growth. He later established his own private accounting practice, which became a lasting family legacy and continues today through Odell, Critchley & Co. in Chatham, New Jersey, now led by his son Michael.

Community and sports meant a great deal to Bill. He was a lifelong sports enthusiast—a pitcher for Seton Hall Prep and Seton Hall University—and later played in umpteen softball leagues. He was a lifelong Yankees fan. He loved golf and was especially proud of his hole-in-one. He treasured fishing and time spent with family and friends at Chadwick Beach. He generously served as Treasurer of Madison Golf Club for many years and was an active member of the Rotary Club of Madison, twice receiving the prestigious Paul Harris Award for “service above self.” He shined most when he put on his Santa suit. For over 50 years, he enjoyed playing Santa for friends and family, including 35 years as Santa in the Madison Christmas parade.

Bill was predeceased by his parents, Helen (Westerman) and William McKinley Odell Sr.; his sister, Carol (Odell) Howard and her husband John; and his brother, Jack Odell.

He is survived by his beloved wife, Arlene (Fox); his loving children, William Odell III (Karen), Patty Jensen (Ron), Michael Odell (Lynda), Suzanne O’Neill (Kevin), and Christopher Odell; his adored eight grandchildren: Ronnie Jensen, Sara Fanelli (Nick); Dylan, Gavin and Beckham Odell; Ryan, Luke and Karoline O’Neill; his treasured great-grandchild, Marley; his sister Sharon Riva (Dick); sister-in-law Barbara Odell; 11 nieces and nephews; many close-knit cousins; and friends.

Bill will be remembered for his humor, generosity, patience, and love for family and friends. His mild manner and easygoing nature made him especially loved by those around him. A devoted Catholic, he will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him, and his memory will live on in the hearts of those he leaves behind.

Visitation will be held on Friday May 1, 2026, from 4:00 pm to 7:00 pm at Burroughs, Kohr & Dangler Funeral Home, 106 Main Street, Madison NJ 07940.
