Sending sympathy and prayers to Rose’s loving family. I was privileged to have met Rose Holm Zipper while walking together with the Rose City Steppers starting in 2000. One time while we were walking up Maple Avenue hill together, Rose said “Walking uphill isn’t my favorite.” I agreed I had a similar feeling. Rose had a great sense of humor, using the Zipper name to dress it up. She said she told her children they had better behave in school because the name Zipper was not easy to forget. Another time, I noticed Rose had managed to cut the front of the commemorative Rose City Steppers sweatshirt and put in a zipper so it would be easier to put on. I marveled at her handiwork. She said “Of course I know how to sew a zipper. That’s my name.” One time I met her while Christmas shopping on Main Street in Madison. She said she was going to San Francisco. I thought she was taking off for California soon. She said, “No, I’m going to the shop around the corner.” Me, the literal thinker; Rose, the creative one. At the Madison YMCA, Rose would often be on her way in to her favorite Joy class. She no doubt brought as much Joy as she received there. When Rose turned 100, Father George called her on the phone from the altar while many of us were live-streaming the daily mass. I brought a card to her house and Richard allowed her to look through the door since we couldn’t greet in person during early Covid times. But the Madison Fire Department drove by in their trucks with sirens and beeps shortly after. A few years later, I greeted Rose after Sunday mass saying “Rose, it’s so good to see you.” She responded “But I can’t see You.” I had worn a face mask just to protect her. I quickly removed it and announced who I was. Thanks for your friendship and for the memories. I love you, dear Rose.
