Obituary of Madeline T. Smith
Madeline Therese (nee Hines) Smith, 89, of Morris Plains passed away on July 10, 2026 peacefully at home surrounded by her loving family.
Born and raised in Paterson, Madeline graduated from St. Joseph’s High School in Paterson in 1954.
She moved to Morris Plains, where she resided for 68 years; lovingly taking care of her family as a Homemaker.
Madeline was also a Parishioner of St. Virgil’s Church. She dedicated her spare time as a member of The Rosary Society and was in charge of laundering the Church’s Altar linens for 40 years.
Madeline is survived by her devoted children, Charles (Kathy), James, Steven (Linda), and Irene. She is also survived by her cherished grandchildren, Christopher (Diana), Conor (Jen), Dan (Karina), Rachel (Chris), Steven, Lexie, and Kaitlyn; as well as her adored great-grandchildren, Charlie, Isaac, and Scarlett; and many dear nieces and nephews. Madeline was predeceased by her parents, Margaret and James Hines; her husband, Charles J. Smith; and her sisters, Dolores (Andrew) Sweeney, Margie (Arthur) Barbour, and Mary Clarie Reardon.
Madeline’s life was a beautiful reflection of her deep faith in Christ. She lived every day with a heart full of grace; always looking for ways to share God’s love with others. She touched so many lives, and will be greatly missed by many, especially her family.
The family would like to thank the wonderful staff at Morristown Medical Center, AVN Homecare & Hospice, and the Morris Minute Men for the admirable care they took of Madeline.
Family and friends are welcome to gather on Tuesday, July 14, 2026 from 5-8pm at Dangler Funeral Home, 600 Speedwell Avenue, Morris Plains. A Funeral Mass for Madeline will be held on Wednesday, July 15, 2026 at 10:00am at St. Virgil’s Church, 250 Speedwell Avenue, Morris Plains. Madeline will be laid to rest next to her beloved husband Charles at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests donations in memory of Madeline may be made to: Tunnel to Towers Foundation (www.t2t.org).
