Obituary of Dr. Clement A. Furey, Jr.

Clement A. Furey, Jr. died December 10, 2017 at the age of 95. He practiced medicine as a urologist for 40 years, initially in the Oranges and later in Morristown.  He delighted in getting to know his patients and helping them to solve their health issues. At various times, he was on the staff at Morristown Memorial Hospital and Orange Memorial Hospital. In 1992, Dr. Furey was honored as the Man of the Year by the American Kidney Foundation. He was also a longtime member of the American Urological Association, ultimately becoming its historian, the AMA and the New Jersey Medical Society.

Dr. Furey and his wife, Elsie, who predeceased him, raised five children who survive him: Michael, William, Patricia, Jeffrey and James. He is also survived by his wife Martha (Thompson) and her five children, and by sixteen grandchildren and nine great grandchildren on both sides of the family. He is also survived by his brother George, also a physician, with whom he remained close until his death.

Dr. Furey was active in the community, having served as President of the Essex Fells Board of Education, and as a member of the Boards of the Morristown YMCA, the Orange YMCA and the Essex Fells Country Club. He was also a Scout Master, having been an Eagle Scout.

Dr. Furey was raised in West Orange where he attended the public schools. He graduated from Colgate University and Case Western Reserve Medical School, and served his residency at Columbia Presbyterian Hospital where he continued on the staff in Pediatric Urology for several years after completing his training. He also served his country during the Korean War as a CIA officer in Japan.

Dr. Furey had a lifelong interest in sports, having played football and track in high school and college where he received all East honors in football and competed at a national level in track, winning the quarter mile race at the Millrose Games. He later took up golf and found a welcome diversion from the pressures of life and an opportunity to spend more time with his family.

But most of all, Dr. Furey enjoyed his family and people and his interaction with them. He always saw the best in others. He was proud of his children, who were a constant source of joy. Until shortly before his death he would constantly visit others to talk and his family attributes his long happy life to his love of people and his optimism.

A funeral service will be held on December 20 at 10:00am at Christ the King Church in New Vernon. Visitation will be at the Burroughs, Kohr, Dangler Funeral Home in Madison on December 19 between 6 and 8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, consider a donation to the Morristown Medical Center Foundation.
