Obituary of Chief Robert Carroll

Robert Carroll, 91, of Morris Plains passed away peacefully surrounded by his family on May 5, 2016. He was born in Harding Township and raised in Brookside. He was drafted by the U.S. Army in 1943 while still attending Morristown High School. He was shipped overseas to France during WWII. Sgt. Carroll’s 66th Division fought throughout France and Germany finally liberating prisoners before returning home in 1946. Fresh out of the Army, Bob joined Jersey Central Power & Light as a lineman, eventually retiring as an Engineer in management. Bob was a 60 year Volunteer Fireman for the Borough of Morris Plains, former Fire Chief and member of the Exempt Firemen’s Association. He served as a Morris Plains Councilman and a member of the Morris Plains Planning Board. He was appointed as a founding member of the Southeast Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority. Most recently, a devoted and beloved school crossing guard. Bob was a decorated WWII Veteran, and a founding charter member of the Veterans of Foreign Way, Post 3401, Morris Plains. He is predeceased by his brothers Eugene, Frank, Joseph, William, Jack , Charles and Edward and sisters Dorothy Beston, Marie Houghton, Cecelia Mahoney, and Eleanor LeGoff. He is survived by his wife of 71 years Anita (Drake), his loving daughters Nancy Shay and her husband Michael, Linda Berry and her husband Stephen, and his cherished grandchildren, Christopher Shay and wife Lisa, Amy Connolly and husband Justin, Matthew Berry and fiancée Nicole Fontana, and Michelle Amaducci and husband Anthony and great-grandchildren Tyler and Shelby Shay, Samantha Connolly and Isabella Amaducci. Family and friends are welcome to gather on Wednesday, May 11, 2014 at 4-8 pm at Danglers Funeral Home, 600 Speedwell Avenue, Morris Plains. A funeral service will be held at the Dangler Funeral Home on Thursday, May 12, 2016 at 11:00 am. Interment will follow at the Somerset Hills Cemetery, Basking Ridge. The family is asking that donations be made to the Morris Plains Fire Department, 531 Speedwell Avenue, Morris Plains, NJ 07950 or the Morris Minute Men, 97 Mill Road, Morris Plains, NJ 07950.
