Obituary of Dr. A. Johan Noordsij

A. Johan Noordsij, age 89, passed away at his home in Madison NJ on Friday, December 16, 2016. He was born in Rotterdam, Netherlands, in 1927. He completed his Doctor of Medicine at the State University of Leiden with an emphasis in pathology. He immigrated, with his family, to Nebraska in 1955 where he completed an internship and residency in psychiatry at the University of Nebraska College of Medicine. In 1960, he began his career at the Summit Medical Group and later formed the Chatham Psychiatric Group. He completed Psychoanalytic Training at the William Alanson White Institute in New York City in 1971. He pursued studies in linguistics and philosophy and was a Professor in both the Theological School and The Caspersen School of Graduate Studies at Drew University for more that 25 years. He had maintained a practice in psychiatry and psychoanalysis since 1960. He retired in 2015. He loved travel, classical music, fashion and design, the performing arts, working and playing with children, and his time at Lake Winnipesaukee. He is survived by his wife of 34 years, Katherine Noordsij of Madison, New Jersey, his children Patricia Noordsij of Bayfield, WI, Barbara Noordsij of Calais, VT, Peter Noordsij of New London, NH and David Gibson of Weston, CT, seven grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Visitation and viewing, open to the public, will be Wednesday, Dec 21 2016, from 4-7 PM followed by a brief service at Burroughs, Kohr & Dangler Funeral Home on Main Street, Madison NJ. A service and celebration of his life is planned for a future date at the Grace Episcopal Church. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in his name to Drew University, the White Institute, or Morristown Medical Center.
