Dr. Joseph J. Barrett, 81, of Morris Plains, N.J., died peacefully on June 9, 2017.

Viewing is on Monday, June 12, from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 p.m. at the Dangler Funeral Home, 600 Speedwell Ave., Morris Plains, N.J. A Mass of Christian Burial will be on Tuesday, June 13, at 10 a.m., at St. Virgil's Church, 250 Speedwell Ave., Morris Plains.

Joe was born in Scranton, Pa., graduated from the University of Scranton, and held a doctorate degree in physics from Fordham University, New York. In 2001, he retired after 31 years from the Honeywell Corporation.

Dr. Barrett published over 40 technical papers and held over 30 patents. He was an elected fellow of the American Physical Society for his pioneering contributions in the development of new Raman and infrared techniques, including photoacoustic gas analysis and avionics applications. He was a longtime member of St. Virgil's parish, where he sang in the choir and served as Eucharistic minister.

Joe was predeceased by parents, Ann and Joseph, and sister, Ruth Judge (Richard). He is survived by his wife, Joan; daughter, Nan Barrett Carino (Sal) of Atlanta, Ga.; son, Joseph Jr. of Telluride, Colo.; grandchildren, John and Lauren Carino; sisters, Dorothy, of Conklin, N.Y., and Joan King (Tom) of Alamo, Calif., and brother, Robert (Nancy) of Westfield, N.J.
