I first met John in 2009, when he hired my company to perform recovery audits. From the first meeting my impressions were of a thoughtful, extraordinarily intelligent and insightful executive. Since then, I have come to know him also as a kind and caring man, as well as a respected leader. Horizon and the scores of people who worked for John were very fortunate for having such a beloved, caring man with a terrific sense of humor who was at the same time a strong and forceful leader. He is unforgettable.
To his family, friends and colleagues: I am so very sorry for your loss. We will all miss John for a very long, long time.

Wow.
Words cannot express the deep sympathy I have for John's family. My condolences to you, Sweeney family.
I am just now hearing about John's passing. I don't know what to say. I feel like I'm short-changing his memory when I say JOHN WAS A GOOOOOOOOD MAN. However, that's EXACTLY what he was. He was so good, in every sense of the word.
He gave me my start in analytics and the liberties and blessings that I share with my family are because he gave a chance to a tall, lanky African-American kid. I've gained some pounds since those days, but his ability to dissect, analyze and pinpoint trends lives on through me. Thank you, John.
To the Sweeney's: May the sweet comfort of the Holy Spirit provide sanity, warm memories, and a loving focus to share many more pleasant times with family and friends. Doing this will help you get through this most difficult season. This, too, shall pass.
Warm regards,
Geo

There are too many wonderful things to say about you, John Sweeney. You were kind, wicked smart, funny. You cared deeply. You put your heart and soul into your work and you loved life and all of its adventure. I'm honored that you were my friend. I looked forward to seeing you every day. Pouring over the vacation home ads you saved for me or talking about gardening or that twinkle in your eye while you investigated whatever I was eating. Laughing, always laughing. I will cherish you always. You and I had our ritual about goodbyes. This one just breaks my heart. Goodbye, my friend. May your beautiful heart rest in peace, knowing how loved you will always be.

"THE MEASURE OF A MAN"
Not - How did he die? But - How did he live?
Not - What did he gain? But - What did he give?
These are the things that measure the worth
Of a man as a man, regardless of birth.
Not - What was his station? But - had he a heart?
And - How did he play his God-given part?
Was he ever ready with a word of good cheer?
To bring back a smile, to banish a tear?
Not - What was his church? Not - What was his creed?
But - Had he befriended those really in need?
Not - What did the sketch in the newspaper say?
But - How many were sorry when he passed away?
These are the things that measure the worth
Of a man as a man, regardless of birth.
John, thank you for adding to the sum of my life....The differences you made can not be calculated...

He greeted you by name with his warm smile and took the time to learn and nurture relationships with people. Over the years, no matter what position you moved to, seeing John was always like home. His knowledge, expertise and professionalism were only matched by his charming personality. I will dearly miss the tradition that we started with the legendary Jenkinson's Beach parties. I am sadden by the news of John's passing. I worked with John at Arthur Andersen and consider him to be my extended family. Although it's been awhile since I have seen John, he was just an email or LinkedIn message away for me to connect with when desired.
Time seems to move faster as we age, never having enough time to spend with those that we care about. It takes experiencing the loss of friends and colleagues to remind us how important our relationships are to us.
I have fond memories of our days at Andersen. Now, one of our flock has gone on before us. He will be forever missed!
Fondly,

As we mourn the passing of a friend and colleague , it is only fitting to reflect upon the remarkable contributions he made to the lives of millions of Horizon subscribers and those he worked with. Few individuals could match his knowledge and understanding of how all the pieces of healthcare fit together. Fewer, still, have ever so successfully managed to improve the quality of care and reduce its costs for subscribers, year after year. John's true gift, however, may have been his ability to harness the energies of his employees to take on huge challenges, produce outstanding results, while always recognizing indivual contributions.
Least we forget, John and his team were asked , every year, to identify and remove not tens of millions, but hundreds of millions of dollars of inefficiencies , excesses, and opportunities in the delivery of care, but only if quality and service could be improved. He possessed the knowledge, skills , and passion to tackle these challenges. He built a team ,year after year ,of individuals who learned the business, developed their own skills under his tough , but compassionate leadership, and pulled together to produce remarkable results.
I can personally attest that John would only speak about results within the context of who on his team made the contributions. Who came up with ideas, who put in the extra time and energy, who tackled insurmountable complexities to produce the results. John would only accept praise within the context of the team that achieved the results. It was always hard to tell what he was more proud of- the team results , or the myriad of individual contributions.
John long recognized the critical importance of quality and service excellence in the mix of financial performance. He was relentless in managing any customer complaints and held his team and his company to the same performance standards that he held suppliers and vendors. It was a very high bar. Just ask any of them.
These accomplishments tell only a part of the story. John was asked to do all of this within the remarkable complexities of the health care delivery system , a complex regulatory environment ,and within the complexities of an insurance company. He was a master of getting other divisions, regulators, and vendors to understand the importance of what needed to be done, and getting them to collaborate.
John's true gift, however, may have been his ability to manage complex people , doing complex work. He needed a team with drive and determination. He was a teacher of the business, a motivator, a stern disciplinarian with very high standards, and , yet, a compassionate leader who understood that all this work had to fit into someone's family life as well as a work life. He listened to problems and issues and tried to help everyone balance their life complexities. Few have the patience and skills to successfully navigate such challenges. It must have been the charm of the wit and humor, combined with that Irish temper, wrapped in a profound affection for those he worked with, that made him so effective.
Having to witness the premature passing of this man seems so unfair. There was so much he looked forward to doing with family and friends. He was going to unleash his love of life, family and friends, and maybe a little golf, into the next phase of a long career. If it is consolation to those who wish they had let John know how much they appreciated something John did for them , rest assured , he knew. He didn't want to be thanked. It was how he lived his life. It was what mattered to him. He knew. It was his joy. It gave him peace and serenity. It gave him renewed energy. It was what allowed him to manage all the complexities and still achieve results.
There are clearly lessons here. I can hear John saying, " see, you have to balance work and family. You have to live each day with determination, compassion, humor, and a belief you are making a positive contribution". We should all listen to his sage advice. Each day truly does matter.
I extend my condolences to all John's friends and family. We have lost a friend, a father, a grandfather, a brother, a loved one, a co-worker, and a colleague. We have lost an individual who made great contributions to an industry and fellow workers. We have lost an individual who we need more of in this world, not fewer of. He made a positive difference for so many people in so many areas. He will be sorely missed. In the end, the best we can do is remember all about John in our thoughts and prayers. We can wrap his soul with our love, affection, appreciation, admiration, and simple thanks and hope he carries those with him through all eternity. Or , until we meet again. Rest in peace, my friend. May you always find the fairway and may your putts run true. You made a wonderfully positive difference in those you touched in this world.

To John's family and friends - my deepest condolences to you at this difficult time. I hope you will be comforted by the knowledge that John was extremely important and loved by all who worked with him and knew him as a friend in the Horizon Blue Cross family. Having known John and worked with him for close to 15 years, I will miss John's dedication, professionalism, deep knowledge of our company and industry, his good humor and his positive energy and presence in our offices and on the golf course.

It still feels surreal that you are gone, Mr. Sweeny. I was so used to seeing you walking around the office floor, saying hello to everybody and engage in a small talk. Your infectious laughter reverberated. It was a pleasure working for you --- a brilliant leader of HCM. You touched so many lives...and you will be sorely missed. Rest in peace. Praying for strength and comfort to your loved ones during this difficult time.

Please accept my heartfelt condolences to your family and friends ,on your loss of John. I knew John by driving him every year here in SC when he attended our healthcare summit. John was an all around great guy, I loved speaking with him and he had a great sense of humor. It is not going to be the same this year when time comes to pick him up at the airport, I made John my priority and he was delighted to see me every year as I was to see him. Rest in peace my dear friend, I will always remember your smile and kindness ,as your personality spoke volumes with love and friendship.
With Love and Respect,
Bill Bonhag

John was a great man, boss, friend, father, son and more to countless people. No one will ever fill his shoes, but let's hope we all learned from him. Like learning to care about people, to smile at them, to laugh with them and empathize with them. John did so many great things for and with people and genuinely cared. Bottom line: John was a class act!
I know that he is at peace and is in a far better place. But my heartfelt condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to his family on their profound loss! May you draw strength from your memories of this great man!
