My niece and I met Donn only recently; we were looking for a home for a 1926 radio from my dad’s basement workshop. We stopped into the store and he was so nice and welcoming - he asked lots of questions, and told us he knew someone who might like it. My dad was thrilled it would go to a good home, but we were even more glad to have met and talked with Donn...a real gentleman, as well as a gentle man. He made some dry little jokes to break the ice, and we were struck by his kindness and curtesy. He made our visits a lasting memory, he’ll never be forgotten. Our hearts go out to his family - he was one-of-a-kind, and a treasure.

My wife and I have been residents of Madison since 1980.
I don't recall when I first met Donn but after that I saw a lot of him. The reason being I am audio hifi fanatic and therefore saw Donn numerous times either in my home or at his shop. He fixed numerous problems with our TV and audio systems with the most incredible ease!
I soon realized Donn's great shyness and quickly found a way to get on a very friendly basis with him which created a wonderful
cordial and close relationship with him. I discovered he liked fine red wine and quickly found ways to bring many such bottles to him over many years as a thank you for his fantastic help with electronics.
We were on a very close, friendly basis for years and when I recently learned of his early death felt one of the worst shocks in all of my life. There is simply no one I know of who can replace him. This is one of the saddest events in my life, and worse I cannot tell him of my gratitude nor say goodbye .
Farewell old friend, Art Helmbrecht

Dear Cindy, Nan and Family,
I got to know Donn in high school. We played tuba in the band and were involved in all of the music activities together. I remember him for his kindness, diligence and willingness to help everyone. I had the pleasure of sitting with him at our 50th reunion and catching up on many years. He was a truly gentle and caring individual. Madison's greatness as a community benefitted immensely from Donn's presence. He will be sorely missed. It was an honor to have known him.
