Unfortunately I will not be able to attend the celebration. I would like to share a thought. I didn't have the privilege of knowing Steve for very long. I did get to work with him for my first year in USi. I was lucky enough to spend a few days working with him in Phoenix when we went out there to conduct a training class. I was able to learn a lot about him as we had time to talk and my respect for the man grew immensely. His knowledge and experiences, his love for family touched me. I was grateful for the chance to learn about him. Without that time I would not have known him. I think of that trip often when I think of Steve. A very good memory for me. Please accept my deepest condolences for his passing. I hope that you find peace and smiles when you think of him.

I look forward to spending some time with Maryann, Karen and Jenny to fill in a long gap between when Steve and I jointly owned the 26' Bristol sailboat, "Pinafore", on the Chesapeake Bay. Steve and I met when we both started at an agency that became part of the U.S. Department of Energy when it formed. We worked for the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration (ERDA) initially. We shared a large old office initially in the Interior Department headquarters and Steve noticed a sailing picture in the picture cube on my desk. We bounded quickly, sharing stories of our sailing experience and realized that we lived near one of the best bodies of water for sailing, any where in the world, actually.
We didn't sail much together, avoiding having two captains on board at the same time, but we shared our love of sailing which continues to this day, though not with boat ownership, with my family, still in Washington, DC. My children have all grown up sailing and the older of the 4 grand children are coming along.
