There are very very few people who exude only positive emotions. Louie was one of those few. I knew him from when I was a lifeguard and later assistant manager of the West Orange municipal pool. Ironically, later in his life, Louie went on to manage the Cedar Grove municipal pool. We used to have a shorthand that when he needed to discuss something, he’d simply point to one specific bench and I’d join him on my break. With Louie, such discussions were never about some monumental problem but usually about how he could go about not hurting or offending someone in a situation. Ultimately, we always finished with me urging him to please think about himself for once. He never changed through the years and he was one of those rarities who, even in adulthood, continued to show the same caring for everyone around him. Seeing him, no matter how much time had elapsed, was always as though our previous meeting had only been the day before. He was truly special and, because of that, he inspired a character in two of my mystery novels. His take on that was, "I always wanted to be a guy like that!" He never realized that he was a guy just like that. I will always remember him as he was after softball games or after the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, when he’d enter Quigley’s Tavern crooning “Night and Day” and then proceed to sing the refrain, “You are the one”, to every female he knew. Without such warm friendly thoughts, his loss would be intolerable.

Mr. Manganiello,
I am at a loss for words as I write this condolence. I never had you as a teacher but you were always kind to me throughout my Franklin Middle School days. I remember you telling me and other teachers what a good kid you thought I was and it always gave me a nice feeling inside. I am so happy I was able to work with you when I returned to the district as a substitute teacher. I will never forget the kindness you bestowed upon me as a young college student trying to become a teacher; it helped provide me with the confidence I know I will need for when I become a teacher.
You touched the lives of thousands of students and will always be remembered as a kind, funny, all-star teacher, and friend.
My thoughts and prayers are with your beautiful family as they acquire the strength to persevere in your absence.
To Mr. Mags' family: The ones we love never really leave us and we can always find them in our hearts and memories.
