Obituary of Dr. Michael Bernstein

Dr. Michael Bernstein, 86, of Murray Hill, NJ, passed away on February 21, 2016 at Morristown Medical Center. Born in New York City, Dr. Bernstein resided in Murray Hill for 50 years. He proudly served his country as a Major in the U.S. Airforce Medical Corps. Dr. Bernstein was awarded a scholarship to medical school from New York University, where he graduated Phi Beta Kappa. Although Dr. Bernstein enjoyed singing opera and was awarded a music scholarship, he decided to pursue a medical career instead and went on to earn his Medical degree from New York Medical College, where he graduated Cum Laude, in 1953. Dr. Bernstein became a Master, Governor, Regent, and Secretary General of the American College of Physicians for the State of New Jersey. Upon leaving private practice in 1973, Dr. Bernstein joined Atlantic Healthcare System, specifically Overlook Hospital, in Summit, NJ, as Program Director, and then rose to Chairman, Department of Medical Education, and Director, Internal Medicine. More recently, he held a position as Clinical Professor of Medicine at Columbia University College of Physicians & Surgeons. Dr. Bernstein is survived by his loving wife, Lynne Fischer Bernstein; and his devoted children, Amy Bernstein-Merl, and Gary Bernstein. He is also survived by his cherished grandchildren, Sophie and Jake Merl; as well as his six adored nieces and nephews; and his nine great-nieces and nephews. A private Memorial Service for Dr. Bernstein will be held at the Overlook Hospital Auditorium.
