Obituary of Henry E Ryan

Henry E. "Hank" Ryan passed away on June 7, 2016. Born in Newark, he was the son of the late Regina (McGrath) and Thomas J. Ryan.
Mr. Ryan served in the Army Air Corps during WWII as a member of the 75th Troop Carrier Command from 1944-1946. After the war, Mr. Ryan returned to Panzer College, now Montclair State University, where he completed his B.S. degree in 1948. He was awarded his Masters degree in 1949 from Seton Hall University.
Mr. Ryan taught Physical Education and Health in the Essex County Vocational and the Newark Public School Systems for twenty-one years. While at Irvington Tech in 1955, his basketball team won the NJSIAA basketball championship in Group II, Section II. Mr. Ryan also coached track and field for five years.
In the fall of 1969, Mr. Ryan joined the faculty of the County College of Morris, eventually attaining the rank of Associate Professor, where he taught for twenty-five years. He became the first Intramural Director and Men's Tennis Coach. From 1969 through 1988, the CCM Men's Tennis Teams compiled a record of 148-80, having completed three undefeated seasons, three Garden State Athletic Conference Championships and one Region 19 Championship. He was named "Coach of the Year" in 1974, 1977, and 1983.
Mr. Ryan was formerly President of the Holy Name Society, a member of the Finance Committee, and an usher at St. Vincent Martyr Church in Madison, N.J. Mr. Ryan was also the Assistant Director of the Madison Playgrounds for many years.
Preceding him in death were his wife of 45 years, the former Bernice Tuite, and his brothers Thomas and Robert.
Survivors include his children Bonnie Dombroski (Dr. S. Wayne ) of Dallas, PA, Lynn Ryan of McKinney, TX, Sheila Ryan of El Paso, TX, Rosemary Misko (Joseph) of Harding Township, NJ, Terry Ryan of Olney, MD and Edward (Stacey) of Severna Park, MD; his grandchildren Courtney Dombroski, Rebecca and Rachel Misko, Eamon, Kathryn, Julia, Ella and Kaleb Ryan and his great grand-daughter Eris Dombroski.
Visitation will be held at Burroughs, Kohr and Dangler Funeral Home, 106 Main Street, Madison on Sunday July 10 from 4 to 8 pm. A Memorial Mass will be said at St. Thomas More Church, 4 Convent Road, Convent Station on Monday July 11 at 10:30 am. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the New Vernon Volunteer First Aid Squad, P.O. Box 13, New Vernon, NJ 07960.
