Obituary of Dorothy J. Mooney

Dorothy J. Mooney died peacefully on Wednesday, June 19, at her home at Fellowship Village, Basking Ridge. She was 97 years old.

A lifelong resident of New Jersey, Dorothy Mooney was born Oct. 26, 1921, to Clarence H. and Agnes J. Burdette. She was raised in Dover and educated at Dover High School, Overlook Hospital Nursing Program in Summit, NJ, and the University of Virginia School of Nursing, in Charlottesville, Va. She was married nearly 62 years to Louis Kenneth (Ken) Mooney, who predeceased her in 2005. While Ken was serving in Europe during World War II, Dorothy worked as an industrial nurse in a factory making bow doors for assault landing craft. The couple resided in Madison from 1950 until Ken’s death. They had four children: Richard, Thomas, Sue Ellen LaBelle, and Virginia Leigh Mooney (deceased). She is survived by six grandchildren: Meghan and Gwyneth Mooney, Evan and Janet LaBelle, and Aleshanee and Colter Mooney, as well as by one great grandson, Graham G. Mooney. She was predeceased by her brother, Edward L. Burdette.

She was a member of the Presbyterian Church of Madison for 69 years, and served her community on the boards of the Friends of the Madison Library and the Madison Historical Society.

A memorial service will be held at 11 am on Saturday, July 20, at Webb Chapel of the Madison Presbyterian Church. Donations in her memory may be made to the Presbyterian Church of Madison, 19 Green Avenue, the Friends of the Madison Public Library, 39 Keep Street, or the Madison Historical Society, PO Box 148; all in Madison, NJ, 07940.
