Obituary of Wendy A. Martin
Please share a memory of Wendy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Wendy Anne Martin, 85, devoted wife, mom, sister, aunt and grandmother passed away peacefully at her home in Danbury, CT on Monday.
Wendy is survived by her daughter Mary W. Carey and her husband Robert J. Carey Jr. and sons, George Martin and his wife Anna Marie Martin, Tom Martin and Bernie Martin. She is also survived by her grandchildren Nicholas G. Carey and Robert J. Carey III as well as Chris Martin, Thomas Martin, Jon Martin, Amy Martin, Ryan Martin and Jennifer Belko. Wendy was predeceased by her husband George J. Martin of 35 years, and her brother Laurence Stevens. She is survived by her twin brother David Stevens, his wife Kathleen Stevens and nieces Anne Stevens Johnson, Pamela Stevens Lippitt and nephew Mark Stevens and their spouses and children. She also leaves behind several friends and family members in England.
Wendy was born on August 11, 1934 to her parents Charles and Beatrice Stevens in Kent, England. She immigrated to the United States in 1954 and settled in Morristown, NJ. She was a dental hygienist and loved assisting patients in the dental setting. She was an avid reader, and enjoyed writing poems. Her appreciation of Greek writers and poets inspired a solo trip to Greece. Prior to getting married, in 1964 she set sail on the ship, Olympia, on a journey to explore the Greek Islands. The trip influenced her for the rest of her life and she would go on to take several archaeology classes at a local university in New Jersey to further explore her interests in Greek archaeology and history.
Wendy was a faithful Roman Catholic with a special devotion to Mary the Blessed Mother. She prayed the Rosary weekly and set a wonderful example for her family by leading a prayerful and spiritual life. After Wendy retired to live in Venice, Florida in 1989, she became active in volunteering in her local parish, Our Lady of Lourdes and spent many years as a volunteer at the Historic Spanish Point. She taught cooking classes there, worked on various conservation projects and made wonderful friends.
Wendy relocated to Connecticut in 2014 to be near her daughter Mary, son-in-law Robert and beloved grandsons, Nicholas and RJ. She found her “Greece” in Connecticut with her favorite restaurant, Mykonos where she enjoyed many outings and conversations with the owners and fellow patrons.
Wendy had a witty British sense of humor and was a wonderful conversationalist who could connect with anyone. She will be remembered by her family and friends for her wit, compassion, kindness and interest in others.
A visitation will be held on Saturday, February 29th at 9:00am at Burroughs, Kohr & Dangler Funeral Home 106 Main St. Madison, NJ 07940, followed by a funeral Mass at St. Vincent’s Martyr Church at 10:00am, 26 Green Village Road, Madison. Interment will follow immediately after at St. Vincent Cemetery, Madison.
In lieu of flowers, because of the wonderful care Wendy experienced under Hospice, the family kindly requests donations be sent in memory of Wendy A. Martin to RVNAhealth - 27 Governor Street, Ridgefield, CT 06877.
