Eulogy: Helen E. Hunter – Nana/Grandma
September 2, 2020
Poem written by her granddaughter Dominique Hunter, daughter of Brian Hunter and his wife Gislaine.
Dominique wrote this poem from the perspective of all of us – sisters & brothers, children & grandchildren, nieces & nephews and friends – to honor her life.

Dark tresses surround the sweetest smile
New love blooming down the aisle
Picking strawberries and being a sister
A lifetime friendship, we sure will miss her
The constant comfort of warm hugs and meals
A Mother’s love to mend and heal
Each Sunday she knelt ever faithfully
Singing hymns of God’s glory
Always helping those in need
A gracious giver. Now we, her seed,
Carry on her legacy
Of kindness, peace, and harmony
Tresses fading to pearly white
Remind us of cookies and snowy nights
Gathered together by the warmth of your care
Were the happiest moments that we shared
You were our sun we circled around
But a constellation you have become now
Always reminding us to go higher
To be our best selves, you always inspired
Eighteen lives created from your womb
Each time we see ourselves, we see you
Though in your absence we shed tears
We have peace that you rest with those past
and will remember happy years
The safest of journeys on your warm summer wind
We will miss and remember you until we are reunited again

Eulogy: Helen E. Hunter – Mom
Written and presented by Michael P. Hunter on September 2, 2020
When my father passed away 19 years ago, I stood at this very same lectern here in St. Virgil’s church and I gave some thoughts about my father. When describing my father, I used the metaphor that he was like a lighthouse, since he loved the ocean and to sail. I described him as a lighthouse that stood tall and strong against the weather and sea and provided a guiding light to protect his little sailors or his children.
I also described my mother as the lighthouse keeper, the one that helped to keep the lighthouse running and functional - and this was so true. You need both a strong lighthouse and light housekeeper to make it work, which they did extremely well for 53 years.
What I didn’t realize, and it took me a while to truly understand, is that I may have had this somewhat wrong. The thing I didn’t realize was how strong and guiding my mother actually was.
I grew to understand that she was exactly like my Father, a lighthouse. She was very strong and showed everyone the right way to go and the right thing to do - you just had to look for it sometimes, like the shine from a lighthouse far away in the distance or the beams of light coming out from a thick fog - it was always there!
Throughout her entire life, she showed us the way by leading by example:
• Through her patience and kindness
• How she spoke to and treated others
• Through her strength, perseverance and independence
• Through her service to the church and others
• And most importantly - always loving her children and grandchildren, no matter what
On behalf of all her children and the people she has touched during her life, I want to say thank you Mom. Thank you for all the years of love, laughter, guidance, and the joy you have brought to all our lives. We miss you so much it hurts. But also thank you for showing us the way, the right way, like a good and strong lighthouse does.
