Obituary of James J. McGovern

James J. McGovern 85, formerly of Florham Park, passed away peacefully at the home of his son surrounded by his loving family. Visiting will be on Sunday, October 4, 2020 from 2-5pm at Burroughs, Kohr & Dangler Funeral Home, 106 Main Street, Madison. A Funeral Mass will be held on Monday, October 5, 2020 at 10:00am at Holy Family Church, 1 Lloyd Avenue, Florham Park. Entombment will follow at Gate of Heaven Mausoleum, East Hanover. The son of the late James McGovern and Mary (Mae) Ward, he was born in Newark, NJ, and lived in Maplewood before moving to Florham Park 50 years ago. He was a 62-year member of the Iron Workers Local No. 11, serving as President and later Busines Agent of the Local. He was a proud and honorable member of the U.S. Marines Corps., attaining the rank of Sergeant. Mr. McGovern was also an avid gardener and wood worker. Mr. McGovern was a devoted husband, father, grandfather, uncle, and great-uncle. He was predeceased by his beloved wife of 47 years, Marlene McGovern, in 2008, and his sister, Evelyn Ross in 2017. Mr. McGovern is survived by his sons, Jim McGovern and his partner, Joanne, and Dan McGovern, and his wife Kim. He is also survived by his dear sister, Mildred Kelly; and cherished grandchildren, Elise, Devin, and James McGovern. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital, 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38501 would be appreciated. Given the current public health situation, while social distancing and masks will be observed at the services, the family understands if you are not comfortable attending, and knows that your prayers and thoughts are with them during this time.
