Obituary of Calvin A. Zamarelli

Please share a memory of Calvin to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Calvin Anthony Zamarelli, 88, passed away October 25, 2020 at Morristown Medical Center, 5 days before his 89th birthday. Calvin was born in Newark, NJ and moved to Morristown, NJ, where he would reside for most of his life. After completing his education and receiving a master’s degree, Calvin proudly served in the United States Army from 1956-1962. He served in Germany and was awarded a Good Conduct Medal. Before his retirement, he was the Head Librarian at the National Institute of Health. Calvin was a parishioner of Church of the Assumption in Morristown. Calvin had many talents and interests. He was a gourmet cook, specializing in his beloved home country’s Italian cuisine. He was a man of culture and intelligence and believed the value of ‘beautiful things’ that one learned from books, art and music was among life’s most important gifts. In addition to collecting his precious antiques, he was an accomplished artist, and had many portraits of his beloved family members displayed throughout his home. Calvin touched the lives of many in new friendships he formed over the past several years, especially members of the Morristown United Methodist Church. Above all else, Calvin was a caretaker. As the youngest of his exceptionally large family, he attended to the needs of his parents and siblings throughout his life, up until the death of his best friend and brother Dominic, in 2016. Calvin is survived by his nieces, Cheryl Giordano and Patty Ferrara, nephew, John Ferrara and his wife, Joanne, and great-niece, Jacqueline Ferrara. He will also be dearly missed by his “second family,” Michele Bartolett, Maria Cruz, Eileen Noriega and Susy Prado. Calvin is predeceased by his parents, Joseph and Fiorina (nee Gilente) Zamarelli as well as eight siblings, Helen, Ann, Katherine, Joanne, Florine, Modesta, Frank and Dominic. Family and friends are welcome to gather on Saturday, October 31, 2020 from 10 am - 11 am at Burroughs, Kohr & Dangler Funeral Home, 106 Main Street, Madison, NJ. Those who wish to attend the visitation are asked to wear masks and remain a social distance of 6 feet. To ensure that all who wish to pay their respects can do so, we politely ask you keep your visit brief to allow others to pay their respects as well. The family understands that many are still uncomfortable to attend public gatherings and will be unable to attend the visitation. A Graveside Service will be held following visitation at Gate of Heaven Cemetery, East Hanover. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Calvin’s memory to Market Street Mission, P.O. Box 1937, Morristown, NJ 07960 or online at https://www.marketstreet.org/
