Obituary of Joan M. Ruzicka
Please share a memory of Joan to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Joan M. Ruzicka, 85, died peacefully at home on November 9, 2020. A viewing will be held at Burroughs, Kohr and Dangler Funeral Home, 106 Main St. in Madison, N.J., on Thursday, November 12, 2020 from 4-7pm. Visitors are asked to dress brightly and comfortably as Joan loved bright, happy colors and to be relaxed. A private service will be held for the family on Friday, November 13, 2020 at 11:00am. For those who wish to attend the service virtually via Zoom, please see below. Interment will follow at Hanover Cemetery, Hanover Road in East Hanover, N.J.
Joan was born in Wallace, Idaho to Ruth and Francis Thayer and later moved to Jackson Heights, Queens, N.Y. Joan and her late brother, Paul Thayer, moved to Madison, N.J. as teenagers. Joan had fond memories of working at Chubb Insurance. Joan married Richard A. Ruzicka on April 18, 1959, and moved to Florham Park, N.J. where she spent the remainder of her life. Joan was a voracious reader and often finished several books per week. She enjoyed traveling, especially to historic places, and held a special place in her heart for Vermont and Cape May, N.J., where she and Richard would often vacation. She became tech-savvy later in life and enjoyed social media, reading, and gaming on her kindle.
Joan is survived by her children John S. Ruzicka and his spouse Carlos, of San Francisco; Matthew B. Ruzicka and his wife, MariLou, of Jackson Township; Stephanie A. Ruzicka and her husband, Corey, of Florham Park; and Mark T. Ruzicka and his wife, Allison, of Florham Park. She has seven grandchildren: Christopher, Nicholas, Jenny Marie, Megan, Emily, Adam and Ethan. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in her memory be made to St. Jude Children's Research Hospital, www.Stjude.org., 501 St. Jude Place, Memphis, TN 38105, or the Mt. Pleasant Animal Shelter, www.njshelter.org., 194 Route 10 West, East Hanover, N.J. 07936.
