Obituary of Margaret Frances Smith
Please share a memory of Margaret to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Margaret Frances (Reidy) Smith, age 87, was reunited with her husband of 54 years, Daniel M. Smith, when she died October 18, 2021, at her home in Whippany, NJ, surrounded by loving family. Born in Manhattan, NY on September 18, 1934 to Irish immigrants, Timothy and Hannah Reidy, Margaret was the youngest of three daughters (Mary (deceased), and Hannah of South Hampton, PA).
After marrying Daniel, they started their life together in the Bronx before moving to Spring Valley, NY where they raised four children, Daniel (Ann Marie) of Hopewell Junction, NY, Thomas (Kelly) of Springfield, VA, Peter (Lisandra) of Littleton, CO, and Mary Ellen, with whom Margaret lived since 2014. Margaret shared her love with ten grandchildren (Kathleen, Emily, Hannah, Patrick, Mary, Andrew, Trevor, Ryan, Franchesca, Vanesa) and seven great-grandchildren (Benjamin, Shannon, Adam, Noah, Anna, Caleb, and Riley).
Margaret will always be remembered for her love of family, her Catholic faith, and her love of the NY Yankees (often surprising family and friends with her baseball knowledge). Margaret went through life with overwhelming grace and simplicity. Rarely asking for anything for herself or saying ill of anyone she ever met. Her true happiness was family time with her sisters, husband, children, grandchildren, and other family throughout the years. Margaret had a quiet nature but enjoyed sharing with her children and grandchildren stories of growing up in NYC (never forgetting which Subway she used), meeting her Scottish husband at a NYC Irish Dance Hall, and being the first member of her family to get her NYC Driver’s License and car. Margaret held several jobs throughout her life including working as a secretary at Federal Reserve in NY after graduating from high school, driving a school bus, and working as a cashier at Rickel’s Home Center for over 25 years.
There is a special place in Heaven for Margaret Frances Smith and a giant hole in our lives here on earth.
