Obituary of Thelma V. Winterfield
Please share a memory of Thelma to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Thelma Viola Winterfield, 93, of East Hanover, New Jersey, passed away at her home surrounded by her family on November 2, 2021.
Thelma was born in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, but grew up in Tunkhannock, Pennsylvania on a farm. She later moved to Hoboken, New Jersey and graduated from A.J. Demarest High School in Hoboken in 1945, where she met her husband, Leon Winterfield. The young couple moved to Clifton, New Jersey, where they had their first apartment and first child. The family then settled into their home in East Hanover in 1955, having had two more children. Thelma remained here for the next sixty-six years.
Before her retirement, Thelma was a Marketing Manager for Burrelle’s Press Clipping Service, when it was in Livingston, New Jersey, for forty years.
Although born into a Protestant family, Thelma was not a formal member of a church. She believed that Mother Nature was in control.
Thelma Winterfield, in her later years, wanted to be called “TW”. She was a hard-working, energetic mother – taking care of her children during the day and working at night. In her retirement years, she enjoyed playing with her grandchildren – getting right on the floor alongside them. And more recently had the pleasure of knowing two great-grandchildren. Everyone always admired how active she was even in her 90’s!
Those who knew her well, would say she was outspoken, and persnickety. Or perhaps she just knew what she believed and liked. There is no doubt that TW was a very strong and resilient person having been through a long and often demanding life since 1927. She witnessed the Great Depression in the beginning of her life and was texting on a smartphone by the end. She was a woman full of wisdom, and her strength and “fight” to live was still there up until the last day.
Thelma is survived by her loving children, Joyce Lynn Kramer and her husband, Douglas R. Kramer, of Long Valley, New Jersey, Craig Dennis Winterfield, of Black Mountain, North Carolina, and Leslie Winterfield Ziemann, and her husband, Wayne D. Ziemann, of Bordentown, New Jersey, her six adoring grandchildren, Darcy Lindy, Rebecca Ziemann, Rachel Ziemann, Robert Winterfield, Katie Winterfield, and Tommy Winterfield, and two cherished great-grandchildren, Ella Lindy and Isobel Lindy - daughters of Darcy Lindy and her husband Joshua Lindy. Thelma is predeceased by her beloved husband of forty years, Leon Winterfield (1988) and devoted brother, Kurt Rozell.
We will all miss her very much.
