I was shocked and saddened to hear of Nicole's transition. Her bright smile and happy nature was what I remembered most about our time at Rutgers. She was honest, kind, and protective of her friends and loved ones. She will be missed by all who knew her, including both myself and my mother, who still remembers her fondly. Rest In Peace, Nicole.

Nicole was a breath of fresh air, inspiration and ambition at the King House. We loved her Friday afternoon visits to help the Education and Exhibit Committee.
She spearheaded high school visits to the Ledgewood Historic District - banner days for the Roxbury Historic Trust, Inc. and Roxbury Historical Society.
We all admired her beauty and her magnificent hair... and we appreciated her no nonsense insightful approach.

I was deeply saddened to hear of Nicole’s passing. I met Nicole my sophomore year at Rutgers, where we became friends and eventually suitemates. So many memories come to mind when I think of Nicole and the times we shared in college with our group of friends, as well as chatting and catching up in the years after. Nicole was a kind friend, with a great sense of humor, who will be greatly missed. My thoughts are with her family.

Nichole was such light . She just bubbled when you talked with her. You could see it in everything she did. Even in her thank you notes you could see it. Nichole and James were wonderful together. When they talked about teaching or their adventures together. She is in heaven taking care of all her loved ones.

Nicole was not only a beautiful, brilliant, and caring human being and teacher, as well as a beloved colleague, but her quick wit and terrific sense of humor always brought a smile to my face and could crack me up from the moment I started to talk to her. I'll always be thankful that I got to know her really well my first year teaching at Roxbury High School. I'm comforted knowing that her laugh and smile are unforgettable.

Nicole was one of those rare people who had a beautiful light inside them which lit up a room, she did not have a drop of meanness. She was kind, compassionate, loving; just simply beautiful inside and out. A friend recently told me people are here on loan from above. This reminded me how lucky we were to have shared time with her. She was loved by her students and all whose lives she touched. We learned from her because being a teacher is who she was and she modeled this in all her acts of generosity. I had the incredible privilege to call Nicole a friend. She was always there to listen and share of her time - knowing how much she did, this was a gift in itself. Nicole made you feel good when you were with her and when you left her, the warmth lingered. She was always up for shoe shopping and a day at the beach…. I will miss her and keep her in my heart knowing she is watching out for us, her family, and most especially James. She waited for you and you hit all her dream guy points and she won’t ever leave you…. I miss her, love her and can’t imagine how to fill the hole she leaves. I will think of her often and remind myself to be better and use her actions to guide my own because they always came from a place of love and kindness. Until we meet again my friend, I love you.

I met NIcole through our teachers´ union and got to know her better at our ladies game nights. Nicole and I talked one night about her wish to find the right man and to experience real love. It wasn´t too long after that, that James came into her life and her wish for true love happened.I was thrilled to know that Nicole was so happy and to see the smiles on your faces in your wedding pictures. You could see the love in those photos. James, you were the man Nicole dreamed of. To you and her family I give my condolences. I feel as devastated by her loss as everyone who knew Nicole does. She was a beautiful person inside and out.

James and family, I am so glad Nicole had almost this past year to be with all of you. We were all praying for a miracle. On Monday the sun came out while it was raining. I believe she sent me a sign that she is okay. Thinking of all of you all and knowing the memories will give you peace.

Nicole truly was a becon of light to all who knew her. She was so clever, kind, funny, and incredibly compassionate. Nicole loved James fiercely and he made her dream come true of finding the love of her life. She was an incredible teacher who touched all of her students with a deep love of history and understanding of how a true master teacher can change their life. There was never a better, more loving friend than Nicole and I will miss our adventures we had together. I always knew I could get steady and loving advice from her and of course copious amounts of laughter. I can still hear her glorious laughter and I know she is making heaven a better place with her light. Sail on Nicole and know you have made the world a much better place. We will take care of James and surround him with the light of your love that you gave so many of us. I love you.

Ms. Barbato was one of the best teachers I had at RHS. She clearly loved teaching, her students, and life. She motivated me everyday to be a better student even though I was going through a challenging time. She was a bright light that I looked forward to seeing everyday in class. She had such an lasting impact on her students. The Roxbury community will miss her.

Nicole was The god mother and aunt to my daughter. When we were thinking about who to pick to be Isla’s god mother…. We did not have to think to much. It was an easy choice, it had to be Nicole. She was the smartest, kindest and most generous person we knew. And if we had to pick someone to look over our daughter it was her and James. Nicole will live in our memory and I will spend my life time telling stories of Nicole to my daughter, for like all of us she did not have enough time with our beautiful Nicole. I love you so much.

While I never had her as a teacher at Roxbury, she was truly an inspiration to many and always there for her students when they needed someone to talk to. She will be greatly missed at RHS as well as in the hearts of so many friends she has made over the years. My condolences go out to all of her family and close friends as they celebrate the life of an amazing person. She will forever be in our hearts. ❤️

Nicole and I became friends during our time at Rutgers. She was a smart and funny lady with a kind heart. We would send each other cards for birthdays and holidays through out the years. I always enjoyed catching up with her and hearing about her adventures and her students. I remember cracking up at the time she dressed up as a woman from the gold rush era. She was passionate about history and loved being a teacher. I remember all the fun times we had going to the dining hall with our group of friends, and having parties in the dorm. I am honored and blessed to have had Nicole in my life as a friend.
