Obituary of Edward Michael Shine
Please share a memory of Edward to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Edward Michael Shine, known to his family and friends as “Mike” or “Michael”, passed away after a brief illness on January 22nd at his home in Morristown, NJ, with his devoted wife, Kathy, and close friends by his side. Michael was the third of five children born to Edward and Genevieve Shine. Michael was raised in Caldwell, NJ attending Jefferson Elementary School, Grover Cleveland Junior High, and James Caldwell High School. He retained many friendships from that era of his life and was active in organizing class reunions and staying connected with former classmates. Michael went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in English and Philosophy from Villanova University and an MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson University.
Michael had a very successful career as a municipal bond trader. Among his positions, he was a Vice President at Dillon Read and Co. and a Partner and Senior Vice President at Cowen and Company, both of NYC. During the last sixteen years of his career, he was a partner and Senior Vice President of the GMS Group in East Hanover, NJ.
Although Michael worked diligently at his career, he had many interests outside of work. He will be especially remembered for his love of family and his generous spirit. He went out of his way to help not only family members but also old friends to celebrate accomplishments and to lend support in times of need. He made a special point of keeping his far-flung family members in touch with each other.
Michael was married to the love of his life, Kathy, for 40 years. They settled in Morristown, NJ where they spent many enjoyable hours gardening on their beautiful property. The couple had a second home in Boca Grande, Florida where they enjoyed many relaxing weeks walking the beach, entertaining friends, and in Michael’s case, sport fishing. They also loved to travel abroad and took many excursions over the years.
Michael’s generosity extended to charitable organizations. He was a major donor and fund raiser for the Dystonia Medical Research Foundation and was awarded 2010 Man of the Year.
Michael is survived by his wife, Kathy Ferguson; his siblings, Joseph Shine, Laura Shine-Revilock (Will) and Eileen Ott; his nieces and nephews, Tracy Tofanelli (John), Alexandra Shine, Myah Revilock, Keith Nolan (Lauren), Colin Bonfield (Shaz) and Ryan Bonfield (Nicole); his great nieces and nephews Abigail Tofanelli, Riley Nolan, John Tofanelli, Clay Tofanelli, and Tyler Nola. He was preceded in death by his parents, Genevieve and Edward Shine and by his sister, Anita Nolan.
The family would like to thank Michael’s friend, John Cullum, for his long-term friendship and unwavering support during Michael’s illness.
Donations can be made in Michael’s memory to The Dystonia Medical Research Foundation, 1 East Wacker Drive, Suite 1730, Chicago, IL 60601 or online at www.dystonia-foundation.org/
