I’d be remiss if I didn’t say anything. Lissete was my godmother, someone whom I’ve known since I can’t remember. Her passion for literature and writing inspired me to write this. Something we can all share in common is that we experienced her love. Her warm embrace, smile, hugs, and kisses when she greeted you never failed to light up any dark day. She shed the light that we all longed for. She was courageous, loving, caring, and your number one supporter. Just like she loved and looked over me on her short time on earth; I know she is looking over me (us) from above. She has become a guardian angel. I hope that in my lifetime my memory of her never fades.

Lissette joined our NYC book group sometime around 2005. When I needed help with saving the science program for an under-privileged K-8 school in upper Manhattan (Amistad), she jumped right in! A wonderful, giving, funny, gracious, smart and talented person, she lit up many a room and warmed many a heart. We grieve with the family she loved so…

Lissette welcomed me to MSU shortly after she started in the Provost office, I walked into my office where she made sure I had a nice welcome message that set the tone for how we would work together, she was a great support and a kind-hearted person, always going above and beyond to ensure others were well. She drove me around Montclair and drew me maps to learn detours to campus so I wouldn’t get lost in NJ, she constantly asked if she can help when her own task list was long, she had a tender spirit and cared deeply for others, she was selfless. I hope you fly high Lissette and felt nothing but love as you went into heaven, you will be missed, and I am grateful to have met you. My smiling memories of Lissette are the love she had for her nephew, whom she adored, and with her artistic ability, knowing she always found a way to make us smile. My whiteboard was always her canvas as she left for the day.

Lissi,
Never in a thousand years would I have thought I would be writing in your memorial. You were so full of life. Even though we did not speak every day, and I know I speak on behalf of many, you were always a bright light in our hearts. Hearing your name, seeing a text from you, and opening up your Christmas cards, always brought a happy thought and smile to my face. I have two beautiful memories of you, among many, that you and I both know will always stand out in both our lives. We have always laughed so much at our silly, ridiculous moments as kids, especially when we made fun of the "Cluck, Cluck Chicken Balls" commercial from the 70's. Even as adults, we always looked at each other, anywhere, any time, and repeated "Cluck, Cluck Chicken Balls!" and start laughing like we were children once again. The second most memorable moment I had with you that I know you will never forget was when you came to eat with us at El Artesano during Aunt Elsa's funeral. We were in the restaurant and you were meeting Michael for the first time. We were all laughing so hard that I had to go to the bathroom. When I got back to the table, Michael continued and said something about me that was really funny while I was drinking cafe con leche. Well, remember that everything came back and I spit the entire gulp in my mouth right onto your face. I drenched you with cafe con leche. Lissi, we will NEVER forget your reaction. How you calmly wiped everything off your face and sarcastically and wittingly said, "No worries... no problem...I'll just go home and take a shower." It was hilarious. Michael couldn't believe how funny you were. When I told him that you were with our Lord, he said, "Oh, no not Lissi, she was a beautiful soul." This is coming from someone who only met you twice. You can only imagine what the rest of us are feeling, Lissi. We never told you enough how much you brightened our lives when we were with you, and how much we truly loved you. Life gets in the way sometimes. But I know you are now so much better off than we are, as we know you are enjoying everlasting life to the fullest. Til we meet again, my cuz!

I spent a lot of time sitting in the hallway waiting to see Willard and joking around with Lissette. She used to promise she would build me a little office annex so I wouldn't have to sit in the hallway. She was fun and funny and warm and caring and it's hard to come to terms with how such a good-hearted person is not with us any more.
My condolences and heartfelt wishes to her family and loved ones. We will miss her terribly.

I hired Lissette in 2019 as my Executive Assistant and she immediately set about improving my office organization and my own effectiveness. She was unfailingly kind, thoughtful, considerate and professional in every communication and in every situation. We shared stories of Cuban immigrant experience--my wife is Cuban--and of being English majors and students of literature. She was happy to have the opportunity to return and give back to her alma mater after a long career at BlackRock, and she remembered herself as an MSU student in every student she dealt with. My deepest condolences to her family, whom we all knew she loved deeply. Que en paz descanse

My heart was heavy and sad of hearing the passing of a dear friend. Lissette, Maria and I were together all the time in high school and at Montclair. She was the kindest, gentlest soul I knew. We spent may laughs, stories and adventures together. One of my fondest memories were the many concerts we went to together. We were the biggest Journey fans and spent hours waiting on line in Passaic for our tickets and heaing Lissette scream when the first notes of Open Arms played. She never forgot to drop a note for my birthday or knowing her Christmas card will be the first one that would arrive. I am sad for all the intentions of getting together that never came to fruition. Life is too short. Sleep in the hands of God and our savior Jesus Christ. I know you beloved parent were waiting for you at the gates of heaven welcoming you to eternal peace.

Someone as special as Lissette can never be forgotten...
Lissette was patient with our Team of beginners as she taught me and many others at BlackRock to crochet. She was very detailed, always prepared and clearly explained instructions. Truth be told - some of our early crochet "efforts" at making some of the beautiful sample pieces she showed us that she'd made left a lot to be desired, but we enjoyed a ton of good laughs AND she never gave up on us and was always encouraging. She told me an Aunt had taught her many years ago when she was a child and she wanted to pass on that skill to anyone interested to learn. It was solely through her tireless efforts, ingenuity and dedication that our regular "grassroots" crochet/knit meetings at BlackRock blossomed into a program that produced many blankets and hats for hundreds of sick and underprivileged infants and adults. I am so glad I had the opportunity to treat her to lunch one day and express my gratitude for her tutoring.
May She find Eternal Rest.
I wish you and your Family peace and comfort as you grieve her loss.
Marilyn Phillips - former BlackRock colleague.

It was an honor to spend memorable moments with Lissette. She had a gift of making something that was pretty to start with even more beautiful and meaningful, and while she prepared whatever it was to look beautiful, I remember her face lit up while she's making it. Her attention to detail was admirable to witness. My condolences to her family, she often shared the love she had for her parents, her brother and her nephew. She will be missed and may God bless her soul.

I worked with Lissette at BlackRock and we partnered closely on philanthropic activities - most notably with ArtWorks and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society. María Gabriela and I started working in the provost office this past fall semester. We found a friend and a second mother in Lissette… we talked about so many stories that are impossible to forget. She had so much love to give and she was always there for us, she was our number one fan in all the concerts that we had in the school of music. We could listen to her stories for hours, usually during work, and that was the best part of the day. We will miss her every day and we will remember all the moments that we shared with her. We love you Lissette, Que descanse en Paz. ♥️

I enjoyed her many stories (cuentos) about growing up in West New York, her precious family and her many travel experiences. And as a bonus, we shared a love of the arts and attended a student music recital this past fall. She made an impact on every one fortunate enough to have gotten to know her. -Marilyn

Lissette and I became close friends after she joined Montclair State. I'm honored to say that I was on the search committee that recommended her to her first job on campus in the Development Office. She was one of the funniest and kindest individuals I've come to know. What I will miss probably the most is when we would both observe the same thing and then look at each other and know what the other was thinking without saying a word.
