Obituary of Sally Ann Barylick

BARYLICK, SALLY ANN (URSILLO), a lifelong resident of Madison and 50-year member of the Madison Volunteer Ambulance Corps, died on April 3. She was 96 years old, but few of her colleagues knew that. Sally remained a crew chief on the corps, maintaining her EMS certification and responding to calls until age 82. After retiring from active ambulance corps work, she volunteered for the American Red Cross, greeting blood donors at its monthly drive until she was 95. Married to the late John Barylick, Jr. for 51 years, Sally was the devoted mother of Martha Barylick of New York City and John Peter Barylick of Little Compton, Rhode Island. She is survived by her two children, her son’s wife, Jenna Wims Hashway, her grandchildren Chris Barylick of Berkeley, California, Anne Barylick of Providence, Rhode Island, Julia Place Guzzetta (and her husband, Thomas Guzzetta), Alexander Place, of New York City, and one great-grandchild, Henry Guzzetta. Sally began her work on the Madison Volunteer Ambulance Corps in 1963. Over the decades, she responded to thousands of calls, befriending generations of Madisonians. A highlight of her corps service was delivering a young Madison woman’s baby in 1965. Thereafter, Sally and her husband became steadfast friends of that mother and her family, embracing them after their own “nest” had emptied. Sally was honored by the Madison Rotary Club as its Citizen of the Year in 2003, and by the Madison Town Council for her 50 years’ service to the ambulance corps in 2013. Sally and her family were long-time members of the Noe Pond Club and the Madison Golf Club. Sally served as president of the Madison Music Association and was a tireless supporter of music education in the schools. Even as Sally’s physical strength diminished, she maintained an unfailingly pleasant outlook. She will be remembered as much for her smile as for her years of service to Madison. Visiting hours will be Friday, April 7 from 4-7 p.m. at Burroughs, Kohr & Dangler Funeral Home, 106 Main Street, Madison. A memorial mass will be celebrated at St. Thomas More Church, Madison Avenue, Convent Station on Saturday, April 8, at 10:00am, followed by interment at Gate of Heaven Cemetery in East Hanover. In lieu of flowers, Sally asked that donations be made to the Madison Volunteer Ambulance Corps.
