Obituary of Caroline F. List
Caroline F. List passed away unexpectedly on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at the age of 81. Carol was born in Philadelphia, PA and lived with her parents and siblings in the Philadelphia area before moving to Montclair, NJ. She attended Montclair High School and graduated from Sargent College at Boston University in 1963 with a BS degree in Physical Therapy. She subsequently worked for a hospital and several different physicians doing injury rehabilitation, sports medicine, work hardening and rehabilitation of patients following spine surgery. After retiring from physical therapy, Carol worked for a fabric store for ten years where her specialty was design and production of custom window treatments. She followed that career by purchasing and successfully operating a Curves exercise franchise for five years.
Carol and her husband Bill lived in Madison, NJ for 52 years where they raised their three sons Andrew, Eric and Peter. Carol was a very loving, caring, and devoted mother to her three sons. She loved spending time with them as they grew up, cooking delicious meals, organizing special events at the library and going camping on weekends at Deer Lake. She also served as PTA president at the Lucy D. Anthony elementary school. Carol and Bill recently moved to Lantern Hill in New Providence, NJ.
Carol, being an active member of several sewing, embroidery and quilting clubs, expressed her passion and creativity through these media. She designed and created many original pieces, including numerous round dancing costumes, exquisite silk on silk embroidery work and a beautiful custom quilt for each of her four grandchildren among many other projects. Additionally, she developed quilts that were donated to a charity program for children with terminal cancer. As a cancer survivor herself, Carol volunteered with Cancer Hope Network to counsel and support current patients through difficult times during treatment. She studied to become a master gardener and shared her enjoyment and knowledge of flowers and gardening with others by leading garden tours at Frelinghuysen arboretum and working the gardening hotline.
Carol loved traveling with her husband and family. One summer was spent doing a memorable trip driving across the country and back with their three sons. Carol and Bill’s subsequent travels featured trips to many different countries including China, Australia, New Zealand, several European locations and multiple trips to England and Africa. Carol and Bill spent many years square dancing and round dancing. They served several years as presidents of their square dance club which included being part of the bicentennial celebration in Giants stadium.
Carol is survived by her loving husband of 58 years, her three sons Andrew and his wife Sally, Eric and his wife Christine, Peter and his wife Alice, her four grandchildren Eliot, Jennifer, Sophie and Susannah, and several nieces and nephews. There will be a celebration of Carol’s life at a future date yet to be determined. Donations in her name may be made to the American Cancer Society or the National Multiple Sclerosis Society.
