I was saddened to learn the news of Joe's passing. Such a kind and generous gentleman. I am sure he is in a far better place, having been of service to both his fellow man and his God while on earth.
Joe freely shared his unique combination of intellect and humor, dispensing both with humility and compassion. It was an honor to know him, and I will miss him.

Joan Barrett
It is with great sadness that we must extend our most sincere condolences to you and your family for your loss of your beloved husband Joe Barrett.
Joe was a good friend, respected colleague and dedicated and helpful coworker. He was always eager to assist the rest of us in the group and was constantly making contributions to our work and knowledge. His career accomplishments were many and highly respected. He was creative in finding elegant solutions that simplified and enhanced the advancement of research into the fundamental nature of our world. His contributions are of lasting value to our ongoing progress and are greatly appreciated by his peers.
Joe will be sorely missed and has had a lasting effect on all of our lives. His memory will live on.

Joe was at Fordham when I was an undergraduate. We played in the band.
Since he was older than the rest of us,we called him "Dad" (as in Daddy-O). We looked up to him in many ways.
As the obituary points out, Joe was a lot of things. But most of all "Dad" was cool.

My wife Jeanette and I want to wish Joan and Joe's family our deepest condolences to one of the smartest, nicest and talented persons that I was privileged to know. I met Joe in 1961 when I was a Freshman at Fordham University and cherished our friendship ever since. Rest in peace old friend.

Uncle Joe was special. Clearly his mind was strong but I always saw that his faith was too. He peaked my interest in understanding how science and religion actually worked in tandem rather than independently. This helped me immensely along my own spiritual journey.
I have so many fond memories of the time we've spent together and fun family moments in Scranton and Morris Plains. Also some great conversations, including one where - since he was doing something in space - I tried to get him to confirm that aliens exist. It didn't happen but I tried.
We are all better for the time we spent with him.

Joe, We shared so many wonderful moments growing up. Most memorable are our musical experiences from the creation of the “Barrettones” in our garage to playing together in high school, clubs and a big dance band. Whenever I hear certain songs, I’ll remember my big brother. Bob

I have only happy memories of Uncle Joe. He was gifted in how he could explain technically complex ideas to me, even when I was a child. It was easy to become interested in math and science after listening to him describe things like how lasers help create optical storage devices that can put the entire Library of Congress in the palm of your hand. He stimulated my curiosity and creativity. Throughout my education and career, when I have been faced with understanding complicated, technology related questions, I always thought about Uncle Joe. I told myself that since I was related to him, I must have some predisposition to be able to solve these kinds of problems. Now, I work with technology companies every day, and I thank Uncle Joe for helping inspire my interest in this area and for giving me the confidence to explore what would otherwise have been uncharted territory for me.
I often think about Uncle Joe when I am looking in the mirror – on one of his trips to California when I was a boy, he taught me how to tie a tie. It was another example of him easily and simply giving me a gift of knowledge that I could use later in my life. Whenever I put on a tie – for an important meeting, some fun social event, my wedding – I look at myself in the mirror and think about Uncle Joe and all that he gave of himself to the family around him. It is a comforting to remember as you look into your own eyes. Soon, I will teach my 12 year old son how to tie a tie for himself. I hope he will be able to have such warm and wonderful thoughts when he looks at himself before the important moments in his life.

Thank you Uncle Joe for the genuine care and love you shared with all our family. You welcomed the chaos of our 4: patiently feeding them on your lap as babies: kindly and respectfully conversing with them as young teens. Your quiet influence and intellect positively guided our kids as they all work through their education. We are better people because of you. And we are always going to think it so cool our Uncle was a super scientist and invented so many things. Our thoughts and prayers and thanks for Uncle Joe - The King Family (Tom)

Our prayers are for Joan Bartlett and family. Joe was a very wonderful person, friend, and scientist. He was such a thoughtful, considerate, and joyous person and Joe and Joan were so perfect together. Though so many years have passed, I very much remember Joe's pioneering work in many areas, like inventing powerful methods for acoustically detecting optical absorption and optically detecting air turbulence ahead of airplanes. Even when he was so courageously fighting a terrible disease, Joe took the time to congratulate Anvar and myself on our work. Joe will be very much missed by all who knew him.

Joe was our brother in law. He was smart , humble and had a gentle nature. Joe was a great husband to my sister Joan and she was devoted to him. He loved his daughter Nan
Sal and his grandchildren. He was so happy with John and Lauren showing their pictures
and telling the cute stories about each of them. He loved hearing from his son Joseph who
was very special to him. Family was very important to Joe. His brother and sisters were devoted to him. Jim and I loved Joe very much and we know he is in heaven.
Rest in Peace Jim and Nancy

I was truly saddened to learn of Joe's passing. I had the privilege of working with Joe for three years at the Allied Corporation during the mid 1970s. He was both a fine scientist and a terrific person. As a young scientist early in my career, I learned much from Joe. I know that he fought a valiant battle for many years against a terrible illness, which demonstrated Joe's toughness and determination.
My deepest sympathies go out to Joan, Joe's other family members and his many friends.
