Please share a memory of Francis to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Francis H. Tweed Jr. “Tim” died at his home on July 8, 2023. His children and grandchildren were with him during his last days.

Born in 1939 in Downingtown, Pennsylvania to Emma (Haage) and Francis Tweed, Tim graduated from Swarthmore College in 1961 and Magna Cum Laude from the University of Pennsylvania Law School in 1965. He was a partner in the New York City law firm of Simpson Thatcher and Bartlett.

After his retirement he focused on environmental issues in the area. He lived in the Washington Valley section of Morris Township and was fiercely committed to protecting it for its ecological and historic significance.

One of his many achievements was preserving the 650+ acre tract in Washington Valley which was slated for a reservoir and is now a part of the Morris County Park System. He was instrumental in preventing the Morris County jail from being built in Washington Valley. He was a Commissioner of the Morris County Park Commission, was on the Morris Twp Environmental Committee, on the Board of the Great Swamp Watershed Association, and a past president of the Washington Valley Community Association.

Tim enjoyed reading and had an encyclopedic knowledge of history, liked bird-watching, and just observing nature. He also loved bluegrass music and attended many concerts with his sons. Every year he would spend time on Long Beach Island, surf fishing, listening to the waves and watching the ocean. He loved baseball and was an avid Yankees fan.

He was a very gentle, caring man and loved his family deeply including his wife, sons, daughters-in-law, and grandchildren. He cherished his time with them and the opportunities to provide guidance. Those who knew him felt his warmth, generosity and kindness, and valued his insight.

He is survived by Nancy, his wife of 60 years, his sons Lawrence (Judith) and Russell (Tanya), and his beloved grandchildren Tanner, Aaron aka Grae, Amanda, Zachary and Lawson, his two great granddaughters Penelope and Phoebe, his sisters Paula and Lauren and many nieces and nephews.

We all loved him dearly and will miss him. A family memorial service will be held at a later date.

Arrangements are under the care of Dangler Funeral Home, Morris Plains, NJ.
