My sincere condolences to the family on the death of Mrs. Reiter. I recently learned of her death. She was a wonderful teacher and largely because of her, I continued my studies in German in college and earned a PhD in German literature at Harvard. She was demanding but very caring, and she made a lasting difference in my life Although I ended up with credentials in the social sciences and until retirement used those skills instead, I am indebted to Mrs. Reiter for inspiring me to work hard and not give up.

I would like to echo my brother Tim's sentiments about our beloved German teacher at Metuchen High School, "Frau Reiter." I was fortunate to have Frau Reiter during my freshman, sophomore, and junior years. Sadly, prior to my senior year, her husband passed away and she retired from teaching. Although I took German in sixth through eighth grade, it consisted mostly of rote memorization, but at least it formed the basis of some proficiency in the language. The first day of freshman German class, Frau Reiter let us know it would be the last day class would be given in English. For the next three years, classes were predominantly in German, with English only when necessary. Frau Reiter took us into NYC each year to a German restaurant, where we were expected to order and converse in German. As a result of her disciplined instruction, I won a gold medal in a NJ state German competition and I received 12 credits for four German classes at Purdue University by taking the final exam of the fourth class the summer before starting at Purdue. My condolences to her surviving family members - please take comfort in knowing what a positive influence she was on so many students. May she rest in peace.

I would like to share this memory of my outstanding German teacher, Frau Evelyn Reiter. I was in her German class in Metuchen High school in 1966 and 1967. On our first day, she wrote the word, "discipline," on the blackboard, and stated how the root word was related to the word, "disciple," or learner. The connection between learning and discipline was a lesson from her that has stayed with me for all of my life. Later, she related how she and her fellow Jews would teach each other during their captivity, to keep alive and to retain hope. In our class, Frau Reiter was a demanding teacher, in the best sense of that word. She required that we memorize many aspects of the German language, because that was necessary to gain mastery of it. A few years later, as a cadet at West Point, I was in German class and the situation required me to rattle off the table of German articles, by gender and case. My instructor was very impressed and he said to the class, "Gentlemen, this man has an unfair advantage," which is West Point talk for "This guy knows his stuff better than you do." During my army career, I took the Defense Language Test in German, and got the highest rating for a non-native speaker. I was stationed in Germany three times, and my ability in German was invaluable; among other things, it helped me get soldiers out of trouble with the local police! I was fortunate in my life to have had many outstanding teachers, but none had the lasting influence that Frau Reiter has had on me. She was a great teacher and a wonderful person. Vielen Dank, Frau Reiter!

When Evelyn came into our office, she lit up the whole place. She was a joy to behold and someone we looked forward to seeing every summer. May she rest in peace.
All best to the family.
Lovingly

Frau Reiter was an incredible teacher, dedicated to her craft. I enjoyed my three years taking German and thanks to her, I was able to converse with several family friends who emigrated from Germany in the 1970’s. I was also able to test out of my foreign language requirement at Penn. I knew only a small part of her story. I want to express my sincere consciences to the surviving family. She made a great impact on many students lives.
