I had the honor of being co-leader with Mary Ann for a troop of Girl Scouts for several years. She was so creative and enthusiastic. One time she baked a cake using solar energy during a camping trip. That same trip she was convinced that our tent was infested with bats. For some reason, she thought it would be a good idea for the girls to tour a sewage treatment plant! Another time she hosted 12 girls in her kitchen while they made and decorated gingerbread houses, seemingly oblivious to the total mess and chaos. I don't believe I ever saw her not smiling, never heard her complain and she never seemed tired. She had boundless energy and enthusiasm. However, the thing that I remember most about her was how she accepted girls with special needs into her troop. We had several of them through the years. Actually accepting doesn't do justice to how she embraced all those girls and provided many of them with very special memories. The girls in our troop will soon be in their 40's but those memories have not faded over time. My daughters Amanda and Jennifer extend our sympathies to our friend and former Girl Scout Lisa and to her family. Mary Ann was a very special person.

I had the opportunity to work with Dr Scharf as a graduate assistant in the Nursing Skills Lab at Seton Hall. Her passion for quality compassionate care still sits with me today. I often recall back to a moment when I was a new baby student, and learning how to do a bed bath - one of the most seemingly banal nursing skills. Yet she spoke with purpose, provided evidence, and demonstrated such love for others when describing the task. She reminded us to “always wash the back of a patients neck” citing relaxation and emphasizing the need to simply make one feel as best as possible in the worst of times. Even on my worst days since - the saddest days nursing & the most difficult times - I’m always sure to take a few breaths while washing the back of my neck to remind myself of the care and the love that I’ve been blessed with. And because Dr Scharf said so. ❤️ I am forever grateful for her guidance and the blessing of her love.

I was honored to work with Mary Ann on a research project about Abstinance Education. She was a delight to work with and I enjoyed hearing about her work with the students. She was passionate about helping people and was always smiling. No doubt we have another angel in our midst watching over us.

I extend my deepest condolence to Jack, Lisa ,Chris and all of Mary Ann's family.
Mary was a good friend, a very lovely person , and I will certainly miss her singing with us in the Ocean Grove Auditoruim choir.
We met years ago when I attended the Morristown United Methodist Church, and remained connected up until this last summer when she sang with the choir for the last time. Inspite of her health challenges, she was determined to sing as long as she could. Now she will join the heavenly choir.
I recalled the lovely times we had too, when we attended the weekend Walk to Emmaus and the Gatherings.
Those we love remain in our hearts forever. Mary Ann will remain in the hearts of family , friends and so many lives that she has touched for good on so many levels.
May precious memories of Mary Ann, her strong faith in our Lord and Savior help to bring comfort and ease the pain of loss.

Mary Ann and I are second cousins on our Dads side and was born only a month apart. We grew up together, our families camped together, I was Matron of Honor at her and Jack’s wedding. Over the years we grew apart but was always happy to see each other and our conversations picked up where we left off. I will miss her terribly but now she’s at peace. I pray Jesus holds her family close.

I’m so grateful to Mary Ann for her warmth and grace in raising a wonderful daughter who I had the privilege of being friends with for the past 20 years. To me she will always be “Mama Scharf”. She loved Lisa and Chris so much. It was something she shared openly both verbally and in her actions. As just one example of her incredible love, after Lisa moved to Texas, Mama Scharf called me and shared that she was thinking about how she could support Lisa and thought the best way was to have me visit her in Texas. The next thing I knew, I was on a plane. She was so proud of her family and when my children sent her pictures or Christmas cards, she would reply back gushing with all the news from the adventures they all shared and the many accomplishments of her children and grandchildren. I know she continues to look down from Heaven now with the same love and pride.
I’m so sorry for the loss and pain of her death and so glad she lived, shared herself and her beloved family with the world, and that she is now with God and at peace.
We love you and are praying for the peace and comfort that only The Lord can bring.
2 Corinthians 4:16-18
“So we do not lose heart. Though our outer self is wasting away, our inner self is being renewed day by day. For this light momentary affliction is preparing for us an eternal weight of glory beyond all comparison, as we look not to the things that are seen but to the things that are unseen. For
the things that are seen are transient, but the things that are unseen are eternal.”
Love always, Alli, Josh, Finley and Maggie

It is with sincere and heartfelt condolences that I write this message to the family. Dr. Scharf was a great advocate for students having given me the opportunity to work as a Graduate Teacher’s Assistant in the simulation lab (2012-13). Working side by side with Dr. Scharf, I not only learned from her but she served as my number one cheerleader— always encouraging and inspiring me to strive further. So many wonderful times shared and memories created! It is with a great deal of sadness that I write these words for she will be greatly missed by me and so many whom she’s touched through her community health teachings, simulation lab education, health assessment, adult health skills, or through a simple word of encouragement ❤️ Dr. Scharf, thank you for it is with sincere gratitude for your kindness, and a heart overflowing with love & deepest sympathies to hear of your passing. You’ve left an indelible print in my person, and helped to shape my professional nursing career. Sincerely your student, friend and nursing colleague, Alana Cueto, MSN, RN, CNL 11/28/23.
