Obituary of Joan B. Morgan
Joan Byram Morgan passed away peacefully in her sleep on January 23, 2024 after a battle with Alzheimer’s. She was the daughter of Harold (Slim) and Marguerite (Todd) Byram. Born in Springfield MA on November 23, 1931, as a teenager her family moved to Morris Township, NJ where she attended school and graduated from Morristown High School in 1949.
Joan was a member of the Morris Plains Presbyterian Church for more than 75 years. It was there in youth group that she saw the love of her life, Roger, and told her friend “I’m gonna marry that guy.” She did, on October 22, 1955, and they had a good life, raising and loving their two kids, Karen and Scott, and spending 68 years together. As an active member of the church and talented quilter, Joan was President of the Ladies Aid Society. The women quilted and repaired hundreds of quilts throughout the years and donated baby quilts to church members and others in need. She really enjoyed when the children of Joyful Noise Nursery School would come to see the quilts that the ladies were working on and she could answer all of their questions about how the quilts were made.
Joan and Roger were members of the Ironia Reelers and Hanover Squares for many years, square dancing every Friday night and travelling around the country giving exhibition dances at other schools and fairs.
Joan was a longtime volunteer at Morristown Memorial Hospital, starting before she was married and continuing until 2021. Her name is on the hospital Volunteer Wall of Fame and it is recorded that between 1965 and 2021 she accumulated 13,349 hours, working at the Visitor’s desk, Gift Shop, and Bargain Box.
Joan and Roger travelled extensively throughout the U.S. and Europe on Tauck bus tours and with the church travel group. She loved spending time in LBI with her family, walking the beach and swimming in the ocean.
Joan is survived by her husband of 68 years, Roger, her daughter Karen Huhn and son-in-law, Arthur, her son Scott Morgan and daughter-in-law Laura. She was Nana to 3 grandsons, Erich Morgan Huhn (Samantha Hartford), Tyler Arthur Huhn, and Nicholas Scott Morgan (Danielle). She was predeceased by her parents and brother Richard Byram and leaves behind beloved nieces and nephews.
