Obituary of Joanne Mae Hoover

Please share a memory of Joanne to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Joanne Mae Hoover (Koehler) cherished mother, grandmother, great grandmother, and friend passed away peacefully on April 6, 2024, surrounded by family and friends at the age of 95.

Born in Lebanon, PA, she was raised in Pottstown, PA, graduating from Pottstown High School. She went on to attend Western Maryland College where she earned a degree in Psychology in 1950.

Joanne married her college sweetheart, Kenneth Hoover, later that year, and became a social worker for the city of Baltimore. The family moved several times before settling in Westfield, NJ for 35 years.  After raising their children, she started her new career as a librarian at the Westfield Public Library. She developed a keen interest in exploring her family genealogy and went on to publish two books on the Hoover family history.

Joanne and Ken moved to New Holland, PA in 2003.  She continued to explore family history and became an active volunteer for the Garden Spot Village community.  Her faith was always important to her, and she became a Deacon at the nearby Cedar Grove Presbyterian Church.

After her husband passed away in 2015, she returned to New Jersey to live near family at Arbor Terrace in Morris Plains.

Joanne is survived by her son Kenneth of Westfield, NJ, daughter Rebecca and husband Brian Irving of Hanover Township, three grandchildren, Julie (Vincent) Zaccarino, Timothy (Ellen) Irving and Kristina (Adam) Candler, as well as five great grandchildren, Owen, Thomas, Claire, Anna, and Bradley.

A memorial service will be held at the Dangler Funeral Home, 600 Speedwell Avenue, Morris Plains, NJ on April 27th at 12pm (Noon).  Interment to follow at Mt. Olivet Cemetery in Frederick, MD at a later date.

In lieu of flowers, contributions can be made to The Seeing Eye, Morristown, NJ (www.seeingeye.org).
