Obituary of Constance E. Kain

Please share a memory of Constance to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Constance E. Kain, “Connie,” nee Battershall: beloved mother, devoted friend, and enthusiastic educator; passed away on December 25, 2024. She was 91 and had recently moved to Green Brook.

Born in Newark, NJ, to the late William H. and Elizabeth O’Connor Battershall, Connie was a graduate of Grover Cleveland High School in Caldwell, class of 1951. She then attended Montclair State Teachers College (now Montclair State University) and, in 1955, began her teaching career in Denville.

Connie spent much of her career teaching in Essex County, except for a five-year foray into the corporate world at AT&T. She married and raised a child in Chatham, and in the 90’s moved to Basking Ridge and the Bridgewater-Raritan School District. Connie was a dedicated teacher who spent 20 plus years with 6th, 7th, and 8th graders. A life-long reader and library patron, she especially loved mysteries, antiques, the arts and sitting in the sun.

After her 1998 retirement, she tutored, traveled widely, learned to paint, and organized a Red Hat Society or “Ladies Who Lunch” group. She volunteered as an usher with the Baroque Orchestra of NJ and, at the Bernards Township Library, assisted with the Leisure Learning program for many years.

Connie leaves behind her daughter, Ellen F. Kain of Green Brook, and her current cat, Kitty.

Funeral services are private and under the direction of Burroughs, Kohr & Dangler Funeral Homes, 106 Main Street, Madison.
