Obituary of John G. Gill

John G. ("Jack") Gill, 97, passed away peacefully on Sunday, December 29, 2024.

A lifelong resident of New Jersey, Jack was born in Jersey City in 1927.  He grew up in South Orange, NJ where he met and married his wife of 70 years, Claire Deerin. They later moved to Chatham Twp and then settled in Morris Township. 

Jack was a graduate of Columbia High School and Stevens Institute of Technology.  He retired in 1988 after a career of 37 years at Public Service Electric and Gas Company.

Jack enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in April of 1945.  He served during the later stages of WWII.  Following boot camp, Jack was sent to a combat intelligence unit at Camp Lejeune, in preparation for the invasion of Japan.  Luckily, the war ended, and he was discharged in 1946.  Following his military service, Jack attended Stevens Institute of Technology, graduating in 1951 with a degree in Mechanical Engineering.

Jack began his career at Public Service as a field engineer and rose through the ranks to Distribution Engineer where he supervised the modernization and development of the Public Service Electric system to national status.

Jack was a former member of the Board of Advisors of Seton Hall Prep, where his 3 sons attended high school.  He was a long-standing member of Corpus Christi Church in Chatham, NJ, as well as a longtime member of Fairmount Country Club where he served on the Board of Governors and retired as an Honorary member.

Jack is survived by his 5 children, 11 grandchildren and 16 great grandchildren. His grandson Michael passed away in 1992.  His wife Claire passed away in 2019. 

Visitation will be held at Burroughs, Kohr & Dangler Funeral Home, Madison, NJ from 5:00-7:00pm on Sunday, January 5^th . The Funeral Mass will take place at 10:00am on Monday, January 6^th at Corpus Christi Church, Chatham Twp, NJ.
