Obituary of James A. Henderson, Jr.

Please share a memory of James to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

James A. Henderson Jr., of Morris Plains, passed away peacefully at home on April 26, 2018. Born in Bear Creek, NC, he lived in Morris Plains for 35 years and was previously of Neptune Township. He was fondly known as Jim by his family and friends, and affectionately known as Popop by his grandchildren.

James was a brilliant man, a devoted husband, and a loving father and grandfather. He obtained a double Master’s degree and retired as an electrical engineer from AT&T and Lucent Technologies, where he had five patents. He retired from the U.S. Army in 1976 as a master sergeant, and served two tours of duty in Vietnam. He was appointed a trustee of the Bethel A.M.E. Church of Morristown in 1988.

He enjoyed travelling and bowling with his wife. An avid reader of mystery novels, he also loved to fish, barbecue and cook for his family. He delighted in doing card tricks, and telling jokes and stories to his grandchildren and great grandchildren. His kind spirit will be sorely missed by all who knew and loved him.

He was predeceased by his mother and father, Myrtle and James Sr.; his brother, Ronald Sterling; and his sisters, June Rae, Chestine and Sheryl Lynn. James is survived by his loving wife of 56 years, Alberta (Price) Henderson; his brother, JC of Bear Creek, NC; his sister, Debbie of Philadelphia, Pa.; his daughters, Yolanda and husband George Martin of Toms River, and Deborah Consuela of Morris Plains; grandchildren, Shatoya and husband Clint Del Mundo of Waretown, Michael and wife Anieve Marks of Browns Mills, James and wife Rachel Marks of San Antonio, TX, and Bryana Marks of Toms River; seven great grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews.

“Then Jesus said, “Then come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest.” Matthew 11:28.
